A fire that officials are calling suspicious caused more than $200,000 in damage to one of ski country's most venerable equipment and apparel stores Wednesday night.

The fire began outside of Joe Jones Sun and Ski, in North Conway, N.H., around 7:30 p.m. The business was closed, and nobody was injured, but according to WMUR-TV, witnesses could see the smoke for blocks. According to North Conway fire chief Pat Preece, there was significant water and electrical damage to the building.

"We had smoke that travelled through the entire building onto the merchandise and into the merchandise," he told WMUR. Preece also called structural damage "minor," according to the Conway Daily Sun, which also reported that no other buildings were damaged.

Officials will continue to investigate the fire, but it couldn't come at a worse time for the store with ski season ramping up. Joe Jones has been in business in the Mount Washington Valley since 1955. Sun and Ski also has other locations in Pembroke and Avon, Conn. A second Massachusetts location is slated to open in Woburn on Nov. 2.

Im sure you never did something stupid as a middle schooler either. These kids are just unlucky.

More details needed. If they were just playing with matches (like most kids do at some point) and the fire was an accident, then I agree with you. If they tried to set the building on fire, I think arson goes WAY beyond the stupid things average middle schoolers do, and the kids and parents should all be locked up.

You are assuming they are guilty of arson, which I find highly improbably for kids that age.

I got my hands on matches and started a couple bonfires as a middle schooler. I distinctly remember lighting up some leaf piles in the front yard. I didnt burn anything down but I definitely could have.

Just sayin.

The first 3 words of my post were "more details needed". I am not assuming anything, and like I said, if they were just being stupid kids and playing around with matches or something, I agree with you that they are unlucky. It seems you are just as quick as anyone to judge, but have judged them innocent. You would have to be delusional to think there aren't 11 and 14 year old kids out there committing real crimes.

tell that to the many who were wrongfully convicted and spent years in jail, some were lucky and were released, others are still incarcerated !!

The boys have already been charged. The fire was reported at 7:30. They were arrested between 9:30 and midnight. While I don't want to send them down the river just yet, I'm guessing someone saw something, based on how quickly it all happened. I'd be surprised if they didn't have the right people.

I lit a lot of fires as a teenager. I'm lucky I didn't burn somethign important down. I distinctly remember lighting a can of gasoline on fire while camping across the street. And throwing full aerosol cans of bug spray into the fire to watch them explode.

This is the shit that makes me nervous about having a son of my own

I remember my middle school days were all about lighting stuff up on fire , oh the garbage cans in school field with lighter fluid, fun then. Now I'm happy I never hurt anyone.

I dont doubt they have the right kids, I just question how quick people are to decide their motivation was arson, given scenarios like mine and Nick's that pretty much every teenage male does at some point or another.

The fire was set outside the building in an alley. Whether the building caught on fire on purpose or by accident, it's still arson. Who knows what their motivation was.....

Reguardles whether they intentionally or accidently set the building on fire,I don't understand the "they were unlucky" comment.Clearly they were irresponsible and not unlucky.
