Technical climber rescued after 150-foot fall on Katahdin
By Associated Press, 7/23/2002 14:23
BAXTER STATE PARK, Maine (AP) A New York City man who fell 150 feet while climbing Mount Katahdin was airlifted Tuesday to a Bangor hospital.
Officials at Baxter State Park said a helicopter from the Air National Guard's 112th Medevac unit flew Lincoln McNulty, 24, to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where his condition was listed as fair.
McNulty and a companion, Marta Boyd, were making a technical climb on a route to the Knife Edge known as the Armadillo on Monday when McNulty fell to the rocks below. McNulty suffered apparent head injuries and possible fractures, said Jensen Bissell, a resource manager at the park. Boyd was not injured.
Rangers Stuart Guay and Rob Tice reached the stricken climber and spent the night with him.
They were later joined by members of two search and rescue teams, who worked through the night to stabilize the victim and prepare him for the air evacuation.
''This was a very difficult extraction, because of weather, winds and the location,'' Bissell said.
