Resort or Ski Area: Killington

Conditions: 90% skied off on the groomers, soft but eratic bumps, great weather, little wind

Trip Report:

Met a couple of friends from NY for a day at K on Sunday. Hollywood from the K message board hooked me up with a lift ticket he had to dump. Guess they gave out a couple to Season Pass holders to give to guests as somewhat of an 'apology' for closing a week early last season. Even without the Hollywood hook up, cheap tickets were more available than buyers. I couldn't give away the BOGO coupon I had from signing up to their newsletter.

My friends, while decent skiers aren't into bumps at all, so it was a day spent pretty much on the groomers. Unfortunately, the conditions pretty much sucked from opening bell. We got on the K1 at 9 and hit Eastfall first. Completely skied off except for the skiers left edge of the trail. Headed over to the Superstar pod and found Skyelark to be the same, lower Bitter wasn't bad. Went over to the Needles area from there. The trail under the short quad had the best groomed snow on the mountain. Panic to Needles was scraped clean, but there was some decent natural snow over near the Gondola. Decided to make our way over to Snodon and found pretty much the same everywhere with skied off middle portions of the trails and a bit of decent stuff on the sides. Header under Ramshead was actually pretty nice snow. Enjoyed a couple runs in the Timberline Park. Nice small to medium size 'old guy' jumps for me.

By mid-day my feelings were confirmed, I really need to add a solid carving ski with excellent bite to my quiver. It would really make a day like yesterday much more enjoyable.

Grabbed a quick beer and bite then went back out for a couple more hours on the skied off trails. Middle Superstar actually skied superbly even in the afternoon. Wish we had hit it earlier, but my friends didn't want to take the death slide down the headwall to get to the good snow.

Many closed/reserved trails looked real sweet, especially Northstar, but I didn't have the opportunity to ski them. I finished out my day skiing Superstar and Cascade. Though the bumps on Superstar looked real hard from the lifts, I found the snow to be very good. The bumps were pretty eratic though, hard to find a line more than 4 or 5 bumps long before you hit a massive rut or wall. Bumps on Cascade were a bit better in terms of uniformity, but still not real rippin zippers by any means. Maybe if a crew of bumpers got in there and slide slipped a bit they'd be much better.

Despite the overall crappy conditions, I still had a lot of fun on the hill. Weather was real nice and having an abundance of terrain was good. I'm sure it was better than had I gone to Ragged and skied the same 2 runs for a 3rd week in a row.

Some photos. Sorry, camera isn't all that great.

View over to Ascutney. Such a hulking mountain. I've always thought if they didn't have the environmental restrictions, Ascutney could be one massive area. Alas, it is no more.

real good snow on them. just pretty wacky bumps. there was a TON of beginners side slipping down them. Still fun to ski them, but lots of stop and go when you hit walls every other bump.

Wacky, eratic, hitting a wall.................that's my bump skiing skill level anyway.....perfect!
Nice pics!

I’m going to be there December 27–29th with my son. We are mostly intermediate skiers who’ll venture the occasional black diamond very carefully. I hope it won’t be as icy as everyone has described the conditions the last couple of days.

skied both days and experienced the same. on saturday both lower supe & cascade were under the guns so they skied better though with challenging visibility. i'd call cascade rotd both days. lots of death slide sections all over the mtn. upper skye lark after lunch was 50 ft of solid ice between every pile of snow and people sliding all over the place. lower skye lark was just ice with no piles. triple black.

i'd expect them groom out cascade in a day or so. they'll probably leave a bump line skiers right on lower supe though at this point they're so gullied and walled out that it's probably better to groom the whole mess and let them start over again.

What time was this pic taken? I think I may have been standing right next to you, I was skiing with the guy in orange jacket and blue pants for a decent amount of the day.

Around 2:30ish. It was my last run. I was in my car by 3 and on the road.

Guns were off on Lower supe for the afternoon, giving it ROTA status over the blind Cascade option. It was definately a bit set up Sunday though, did one run before doing Cascade the rest of the day.

He must've taken a break and come back then. My last run was probably 2:15, the group having split up about 45 minutes before that.

It really wasn't that busy at all. K1 had a 10 minute wait at most, same with Skyeship and Ramshead. Everything else was ski on.

The fact that the conditions were that bad, that early in the day is what was most surprising to me. I had heard it was a zoo the day prior. I guess the grooming crew at K doesn't bother to till the snow when they groom?

I'm used to places being skied off by mid-day when it's busy. It was skied off right from the get go.

wasn't necessarily all that crowded but with limited terrain things get skied off in a hurry. when you have an hsq & the skyeship dumping everyone off essentially at the top of skye lark. bye bye snow surface. same on snowden. the triple & quad leave everyone off in the same spot. upper bunny & highline are closed for racing and upper mouse is a terrain park, suddenly everyone gets funneled down the few available trails. k really sucks early season because of this.

I don't know what it is about that trail, but East Fall is always terrible. I swear, it's icy after getting 6" of fresh the night before on top of what is a nice packed powder surface everywhere else. I avoid it except for a the week or two a year it's the only reasonable length of decent pitch available.

I've been thinking the same thing the last couple of days. I'm starting to look around at what's available, but most of the demo skis seem to be all mountain. Do you have any particular ski in mind? I'm not sure what would make a good hardpack ski for me. Probably a narrow waist and short turning radius, but for length I wonder if I should go longer or shorter than my all mountain. Maybe shorter would work better I guess.

A 10 minute line at a few lifts IS a busy day at Killington. As far as skied off from the start, you said you started at 9 and lifts open at 8 so things were probably better at opening...

nice report DHS. i hear ya on the ski thing. just having brand new edges on my bump ski makes me think about getting a ski more inclined to carve just for the kind of day you just described.
