Was up Fri-Sun for my annual trip from PA.
I had a lot of anticipation for Friday First chair with how well the mountain had been reported to be skiing. Started at Snowshed and took high road to Needles, then took Stage II to great eastern for a long warm up run. By the time I got to Valley Plunge, I was ready for some bumps and steeps, and it was nice. Some thin spots, but nothing you couldn't maneuver around. Got to the roped off portion and realized I couldn't go right so I ducked the rope and went to the base. Damn those gondola cars are really not that high... Went back to the top and did some laps in the needles eye area. Bumps under the gondola were nice and soft and middle Vertigo skiied pretty good too. Runs of the Day were up in North Ridge. The snow was very soft up there. I did Ridge Run and power line twice each along with Rime and Upper East Fall. Took my son (whose 10) and two other younger kids on the trip over to do squeeze play. The snow was really nice in there, so we hit it again. Definitely a really really good day. A little cold in the AM, but it's Killington, it is to be expected.
Equally as amped for Saturday morning. We did some runs off of the super star chair. everything in the pod was skiing nicely and then we went over to South Ridge. I'm a big fan of this area, mainly because the slopes have a nice pitch and when it's open it usually ski's really good. especially when it's sunny out! Lapped Jug, jug handle and pipe dream twice each. The kids get a kick out of the "crazy lift"! Skied down to Noel's hand lunch and then went up to Bear. Of couse bear was mad house and bumped up by this time, much to the dismay of my wife she left and took some runs on Great Eastern and then over to Ramshead. My son and I did a 2 laps on OL. OL was an interesting mix of bumps and hard pack, still like to ski it no matter what. I had a moment on OL where I felt old. I kept taking some breaks and my son would ski to the bottom without stopping. I was proud because at 10, I think that's an accomplishment.
Sunday's word of the day was crunch. The snow report said 7 inches, but anyone who was in vermont knew that it wasn't 7 inches of fluffy floatable powder. The visability above 3000 feet was marginal at best with the tops of the peaks at zero. Still some decent snow to be found. Seemed like the trees were a nice place to be as the snow wasn't as crunchy and the fog didn't seem as bad. We skied the lower half of Patsy's (via Vagabond) and did two laps in superstar with the boys. Superstar and Ovation didn't ski too bad, but the visability made them a little more challenging. Glad I had my Sensor Mirror Lens on, it made a huge difference.
That's my report. Wish I could've had a 3rd day like Friday and Saturday, but all in all it was a great weekend. Now I'm back in PA, skiing my local 650 foot hill.
I've got to find a way to get up to K more than 3 days a winter...
