Killington Director of Snow Sports,

The Big K is looking for a new Director of Snow Sports. What requirements should be in this job posting? What do you think the Director can do to help meet the goals of the guest, not just the ski school guests? Like to hear what the AlpineZone community has to say.

Let's hear it all!!!

I believe the job of a Snowsports Director is to bring harmony into the school. There are about 11 important parts of running a great school successfully
A quick list for anyone to run a school.
1 evaluate profitability
2 evaluate customer’s needs
3 program/pricing
4 job description
5 yield management
6 payroll management
7 Key points SS management
8 employee evaluation/performance = pay increase
9 60 % contribution margins
10 Lesson time table – streamline time
11 training, training, and more training

good luck

Ciao

Huh? Is this a plant? Sorry to dump, but 10 of the above items could apply to 1001 positions across resort industries. There's nothing special about any of them. Most of them apply to meeting management goals, not satisfying the customer:

#4 is a non-answer - that is what the original question was.

#2 just repeats and does not answer the question:
"What do you think the Director can do to help meet the goals of the guest, not just the ski school guests?"

Where did you come up with contribution margin of 60%? I have no idea what "Key points SS management" means.

Lastly, I do believe a Snow sports director has much broader purview than the instructional program.

there is a WEALTH of job postings there are throwing about....but all is a moot point , in that Powdr has NO clear and communicated marketing discussion of just WHOM they are trying to draw in as a customer base......flies in the face of the very rudimentary base of the 4 P's of Marketing....Product , Price , Place & Promotion.....how does one gear up to do a job recruiting...when you hav'nt been told WHO to go after ??!

I know that the 11 points are just a description of what anyone should at least consider when running a school/business. The margin is the revenue / payroll. Payroll is normally under 40% and in some schools even around 30%.

As all of you know there is no perfect answer to all of your questions because I will be pulled in different directions with any answers I will give.
To keep it simple, at the end of the day I believe you need a hands-on guy who not only knows what the guest wants but also what the instructor’s needs are. By building a happy, safe & fun environment you will increase the resorts bottom line. Costumers and the instructors needs are changing and therefore the programs as well as the snowsports Schools need to change their thinking. It’s time to go back 40 years ago and see what we did than and what we do now. Just look at the changes we went through.

If the above is at the core of the Directors management strategy I think the "points" will fall in line.

I hope so
Regardless who will take over, the toughest part of the Snowsports School Director job is that he/she will have to like to managing people.
 and have fun
