Resort or Ski Area: Killington

Trailboss Day #: 17

Conditions: Dust on crust, ice.

Weather: Cloudy in the AM. Wind out of WSW. Temps in the 20's.

Trip Report: Back out again. The original game plan was to ski at Burke today, Sunday River Tomorrow, and then Burke again. Alas, the weather has prevented Sunday River from opening up more stuff, and I needed another day to hang out at home. So I decided to get up and go to Killington, figuring that they had the most open and probably had the best recovery.

I drove up the access road and got my parking spot. I had a nice view up the mountain:

Snowmaking on Cascades.

I got booted up, had no problem finding a spot, and then took a warmup run down off of the K-1 onto East Fall Upper and Lower. It was icy underneath but still edgeable:

From here I hit Cascade, which looked inviting with soft snow and snowguns on top:

But just above the headwall, I discovered that the trail was literally a sheet of ice. Not white ice, but shiny ICE. I lost edge on the headwall and proceeded to slide feet first down it. I just kept going because there was no way I could get back up   Eventually I did and I quickly shot down to the Canyon Quad and back out.

From here I decided to ski Rams Head for a change of pace....and hopefully some more edgeable snow. It was decent. More edgeable, but getting skied out fast. White ice and gapers everywhere.

I called patrol for one family who was walking down the trail. Not a good idea. So I did three runs here before taking Caper back to K-1.

I had eyed a nice Blue Heaven and decided to ski down to Bear Mountain:

Pipeline was nice:

But Bear Mountain, though sunny, was icy as well.

So I hit the Skye Peak Quad and took Great Eastern/Cruise Control to the Gondola and then Skye Lark to the Superstar Quad. I took another spin down Cruise Control and back over to KBL before calling it quits for Killington.

About 2.5 hours of skiing. Lots of traversing on the eastern side....that side is flat. Steeper stuff was ice. Interesting to get my bearings again, but I decided to take a lunch break and head over to Pico to see how things were going there.....

Glad you recovered from that slide. A guy died a few years ago on Double Dipper doing a death slide.

Sounds like less than optimal conditions, but it sure beats work. Thanks for the TR, and the quality pics. I think we need more pictures in our TRs.

Naïve question, but why in the picture of Pipeline does it look like the chairs go up, but not down? For that matter, what chair *is* that?

I think that trail is actually Upper Pipe Dream, and the chair is the South Ridge Triple.

I noticed that too. They must be doing some sort of work on that lift and haven't gotten around to putting all the chairs back on. It's not all that un-common of a sight in the off-season... Too bad it's not the off-season...

Thats the south ridge triple. All the chairs are on. It's a triangle shaped lift.

actually if you look closely at the nearest lift tower, you can see that it only has one arm that goes left. The other wire is just an electrical wire.

I noticed that after I read your post. I feel a little dumb for not noticing it earlier...

Thanks for straightening me out.

Ah ... neat. I've never been over on that side of the mountain (yet) to see that. Interesting way to have built a chairlift - that means double the number of towers?

That also makes it Pipe Dream, not Pipeline.
