They say they have 32 trails open. They're counting the park on Reason as it's own trail even though it's already on an open trail. They DO NOT have the most terrain in the east right now. Okemo holds that honor. Take that message down K!

Marketing at its best.

Don't know about acres, but Okemo has 1 more mile than Killington.

not many ski areas that do not embelish the conditions or trail numbers to give marketing that extra push. calling a ski area out for embelishing is kinda like calling a spade a spade, imo. it's what ski areas do unfortunately, and the best way to combat it is to give props to those mountains and suggest people go to those few places that do things right and proper.

it's difficult to come up with an honest way of measuring trails. especially when so many trails are upper/lower/middle. likely you could dissect okemos trail count and after accounting for lowers and uppers and what not, perhaps killington might come out a head? not that i am defending K for exageration or anything.

acres seems like a good way of measuring, but i think it's horrible as it makes resorts that butcher trees and build huge wide open boulevards look bigger and more open than ski areas that have used restraint to keep trails more narrow and classic new england style. miles of trails cators to resorts that offer lots of intersecting trails and lots of beginner expert terrain which covers more milage than a steep expert trail.

regardless of trail count, K does have more diversity than okemo regarding the various types of trails you can ski. not many steeps and/or bumpers at okemo for sure. but regardless, both resorts are probably trying to one up the other in attempts to get more skier visits. i turn my head away from such sillyness, i'd rather be skiing my favorite area with only one way down.

This seems a litle like complaining about used car salesmen.

Their report isn't going to make me change my destination

I believe it is spelled Liar.

This isn't a dedicated skiers concern. As a previous post stated, who wants to encourage the guys with the bulldozers? Okemo doesn't have the steeps and if you want to ski what little they have in good bump trails this time of the year, you have to transfer a distance from the Lodge. Why not compare ski areas by the number of lodges and amount of floor space in them? Anyway, since this thread started with a Killington header, I want to add a little on that area. When leaving the village on that section of hiway where Rt. 100 and 4 converge, I noticed that it seems people have been clearing trails and skiable terrain on East Mountain which can be viewed going south. It looks to me that there is a limited access (no lifts, no charge, no pavement) ski area there. Can anyone elaborate? :-?

I am sorry if I caused some negitive vibes by my acres statement. I just think its harder to exagerate acres than it is trails. The point about 3 trails could actually be 1 is where I was going. Some resorts report trails and then runs that at least lets you know how many ways down.
Integrity in ski reports is suspect. These boards are great. I usually only believe someone who was recently out making turns, or local who works at the mountain in a non marketing role.
I worked in a ski resort maketing department and there was great pressure to give the best possible report. When it was cold we would say ( just plain fast) all verbage was carefully chosen. I was constantly pushed to give a better spin. I will leave the resort nameless.

Nothing wrong with carefully choosing your words. However, if you want to make a case about dishonesty, you ought to edit your posting and correct your spelling. If it is cold, it IS fast. When I worked for Ski Town in the Blue Hills, the largest ski shop that ever existed (Challenge That!!! 8) ) , the office guy who had the most all around ski shop experience would always say it was a >>Green Wax Day<<, not that it was a cold day or fast ski conditions. You can't push Cross Country equipment or trail passes if you tell people it is fast. In fact, that year I would often ski out of the shop as the elaborate and vast trail system had an entry point there. I could prabably call the guy a liar when polar wax worked better than green, but that would be an expert opinion!!! that season I sold so many Rossy cross country skiis they gave me a week, all expense paid vacation at Crested Butte. I was the oldest guy in the shop and one of the younger back country purists used to get on my case for lying to make a sale. Sorry, but I don't carry any guilt about my approach. I didn't take the trip, either.
