Got there a couple of minutes before 10 and waited for the gondola to open. There was a sizable crowd lined up. Crowd hollered when first chair was loaded. And so the 2011-2012 lift served season began in the East. Once we got to the peak we had to walk down the Peak Walkway to access the North Ridge area. No one complaining. Just stoked we were about to ski in October at Kton. Hadn't been the case in a while.
Got to the top of the North Ridge triple, changed from my hiking boots to new ski boots and game on! Guns were off in Rime to let skiers enjoy the skiing. Same thing when they opened Reason. Guns were blowing snow on Upper East Fall and Ridge Run and parts of Great Northern.
Surface was weird since it was left ungroomed. Hadn't softened up and there were small chunks of snow that you had to be on the lookout for. Several runs in and the surface started to soften off and ski more uniform. By the time we left at 12:30 it was skiing much better. They opened Reason with its small terrain park at around 11. Park rats were happy. Surface kept getting better. Crowds manageable. Waited no more than 5 mins in line. Called it a day after about 10 runs and a couple of hours. How was it? Great! It's October and we're skiing at K just nine weeks after Irene's wrath. Some cardio hiking up the Peak Walkway and called it a day. Powder day on Rime tomorrow. See you there.
