When you check K's webpage they continuously tout having the most open terrain in Vermont, which is cool. However, why not tout having the most open terrain in the East?
I know some explanations. With Sugarloaf's expansion, Sugarloaf more often than not has the most open terrain in the East. That's certainly the case when most of their terrain is open. When that happens, Killington can only claim to have the most in Vermont. Another explanation is that Sunday River sometimes has more terrain open than Killington. When both are fully open, however, Killington has more open terrain. And when both have similar amounts of terrain open, Killington can often claim to have more skiable acres open and more miles of open terrain.
Take a day like today. Killington has more open terrain than Sugarloaf by any metric (the thaw did a number on every Eastern ski resort). It arguably has more open terrain than Sunday River as well. Although K has 2 less trails open than SR (82 vs 84), K has more skiable acres and more miles of open terrain. So, the question stands....On days like today - which probably happen quite often during the season -why not tout having the most open terrain in the East?
