heavenly has some awesome spots the locals will let you in on if you ask nicely. the layout of heavenly is painful for snowboarders. a lots of traversing.
the runs a squaw are fantastic. i personally like squaw better an heavenly. but the south lake has a lot more shops and businesses than the north lake.
have fun. wish i can go.

A friend posted on FB yesterday about the 77" just received at Squaw Valley, followed by beautiful blue bird sky. She said the hardest part getting to it was shoveling out the 59" in her driveway in Truckee. Can't. Even. Imagine.

Go to Heavenly and spend the entire day there without skiing a single trail. Heavenly is all about off piste. You can get from one side of the mountain to the other without skiing on any marked trails. The place is amazing if you know how to get around it. My advice is find someone who knows what they are doing and where to ski there and follow them. There are so many hidden places to go it is amazing. If you avoid the trails at Heavenly it is one of the best places you will ever ski.

This next storm system is why I always said you really need to do the last minute thing when booking to tahoe. The base there will remain strong but the surface conditions are about to nosedive at most areas. Higher elevations maybe spared?

Mammoth will likely do well.

What am I missing? I see more snow in the forecast.

Figured I’d reply again because as it turns out we’ll be going to Reno and Mammoth for spring break after seeing how much snow they’ve been getting.

JFK has direct service to Reno on JetBlue. We’re flying out Sunday evening Apr 14th. Will stay Sunday and Monday in Reno at Harrahs, ski mt rose Monday then head to Mammoth on Tuesday. Will decide whether to ski or just drive Tuesday when we’re out there. The ride from a Reno to Mammoth is only about 3 hours, not the 4.5 I mentioned earlier....it’s shorter than I remember!

The flight was $371 the other day, now it was $412 when I booked this morning. Using chase sapphire points so it’ll be free. That price includes one checked bag. What my wife and I do is take one large suitcase with both of our clothes, and a ski bag that fits 2 pairs, so we each have one checked bag. The transpacks with boots are the carry on. Boots come out on the plane and are our “personal items” because the transpack with boots in it won’t fit in the compartment but fits fine with no boots.

Will stay in Mammoth probably at an Airbnb from tues-Friday nights, then head back to Reno Saturday evening for the flight back. Looks like there is and will be lots of options for places to stay.

Most airlines will count a ski bag AND boot bag as one piece of luggage, so one boot back could be checked for free. Not sure how Jetblue is on this though.

Yep but my boots are staying with me...if the skis don’t make it I’ll get demos but I want my boots :)

Good call, although I've always rolled the dice checking them, and haven't lost......yet.

I wouldn't exactly say Squaw has "better" skiing than Mammoth!

But it's definitely cheaper staying at Reno.

Sadly, it's straight up pouring here in Tahoe since 10am, and I'm at 8400 feet. Hoping for some new snow next week as now our snowpack is a wet, unstable mess.

I suspected it was gonna play out like that. Fwiw its probably all good from stagecoach and higher. It looks like the weekend snow levels crash down also. Compared to the yards of blower you all been getting it does hurt I bet. Corn cycle this spring will be strong!

Edit where are you living on the south shore at 8400? I ask because the highest neighborhood I can think of would be around stagecoach and that tops out at like 7500.

@Bandit2941 why drive all the way down to Mammoth? You will get better skiing in Tahoe and you can stay for next to nothing in the casinos.

I can actually stay comped in any of the Caesars casinos: Harrah’s Reno or Tahoe as well as Harvey’s. It still costs around $30 per night for resort fees though. Our friends would need their own room and it wouldn’t be comped. I’m not sure about better skiing either. Definitely not up for driving to Squaw every day from Reno. Harvey’s/Harrah’s Tahoe is a blast, but if we do that Kirkwood is a must and not sure if they will be open in the middle of April, one site says projected close 4/7. Not up for 4 days at Heave. There are 4 of us going and there are many airbnbs in Mammoth for 4 nights in the $800-$1000 range. Not bad when divided by 4. Then when we get to Mammoth we’ll be at the mountain and won’t need the car to get to a mtn every day. Lift tickets for 4 of 6 days were $371 when I checked. Flight is free with credit card points, about $210 for a big car (divided by 4), max of $250/person for lodging. Not too bad.

The older I get I’m more in favor of spending a couple more dollars and doing what I want instead of counting every penny. Particularly because are flights are free anyway. We’ve done Tahoe a few times before and we did Mammoth in July, so we want to ski it when the entire mountain is open. But I’m not going to book lodging just yet since ther seems to be many options. We’ll stay a bit flexible in case Tahoe does end up looking better for some reason.
