This may seem like a silly question for those long-time skiers out there, but since I'm a last-couple-seasons raw recruit, I got curious the other day...

What mountains in New England, by state, are the largest, and which are the busiest?

I'd have to guess (and it's just a guess) that Wachusett is the busiest in Massachusetts (but doubt it's the largest - would that go to Jiminy?) In VT I'd assume Killington is busiest (don't know about largest). I have no idea on NH or ME.

Anyone have better impressions or more details?

You can argue Killington either way in Vermont.

Unless you count a really flat beginner run down to the base of the Skyeship gondola, Killington really doesn't have sustained vertical. The single chair at Mad River gives you more than 2000 feet of vertical. Stowe gives you 2300 feet though the bottom is a runout. Sugarbush gives you 2600 on North and that's far more sustained than the wimpy 3000 at Killington.

With the new ownership, it's unclear if Killington is going to get the most skier visits this year. Okemo is up over 550,000 skier visits and growing. Okemo only has 60% of the uphill capacity and skiable acres of Killington so it's probably the "busiest" on weekends.

The Canyons is the largest resort in Utah in terms of skiable acres and uphill capacity. That's why Vail wanted to buy it so much since they're the largest in Colorado.

You think Belleayre is busier than Hunter? Really? I dunno Hunter on the weekends is mayhem, maybe it just feels busier since it funnels through the summit in the same spot.

Never been there, but how does that Trois Vallees of Western NY, Holiday Valley, compare to Hunter in terms of skier visits? Being the closest substantial area to Buffalo, Rochester, a good chunk of Pennsylvania and Ohio and probably the Kitchener-Waterloo Region, if not more of Ontario has got to count for something (Hell, throw Detroit in there too.)

The Beast is a waste. I think I payed $5 for it. It took us to a real tracked out trail that wasn't that special. Last year I skated out to the drop off area from the cat and it took like 5-10 mins. and was free.

For NY out of the mountains I have visited the most crowded for lift lines would have to be Whyndam.
