A new water park that was supposed to open Friday is still dry. For the second summer in a row, "Closed" signs hang on the ticket windows at Sno Cove in Scranton.
The water park was supposed to open last year. Then the owner said by this Fourth of July it would be open. Now that's not happening either.
"We had some problems with the sewer drainage behind the Lazy River so we had to install a new sewer," owner Denis Carlson explained.
In addition to the sewer problem, the wall surrounding the Lazy River collapsed over the winter and had to be rebuilt, Carlson added. More than 100 construction workers have been busy seven days a week, putting in 12-hour days to fix the problems.
That's in addition to finishing other projects like the miniature golf course, bumper boats and other rides.
Despite all of the holdups, the owner said the place will open this summer.
"July 18 is our opening day. We will have the majority of the rides open," Carlson vowed.
Crews are working 12-hour shifts
to finish up all the work.
He said the only attractions that won't be open that day will be the wave pool and a giant water slide called the Tundra Tornado. He expects those to open August first.
As for the rest of the rides, it's a matter of topping off the structures with plastic.
The section that will house the pro-slide, which will allow eight people to race each other, is still unfinished. Carlson said with help from a crew of 30 people it should be completed by the end of next week.
The price tag for the entire project is $18 million paid for by bank loans and private investors.
The owner stressed there are no financial troubles with Sno Cove, just a matter of finishing the work to get water park open in Scranton.
Sno Cove workers said the water park is considering offering specials once it opens July 18.
Fewer than 20 people purchased season passes and the owner said he is more than willing to give people a refund.
