Date Skied: Friday, February 23, 2007 10AM to 2 PM (short day)

Ski Area: Loon Mountain, NH

Conditions: Packed Powder, Windy and COLD

Trip Report: Got in a short day of skiing with the family at Loon. Showed up at around 10:00 to the expected holiday crowds. I wanted to leave earlier but there were concerns about a repeat of the near-miss we had a few weeks ago driving to Waterville so I had to compromise...

Used the advice provided before on how to get around (thanks for the PM, Bob)...since we didn't show up early enough we never bothered to go on the Gondola, which had a long line. We took a run down Lower Bear Claw from the Seven Brothers triple and then my son and I went up to the summit using Seven Brothers and the East Basin double. There was a 3-5 minute wait for each lift but that wasn't bad. The liftline trail under the East Basin Double was completely bumped up and looked like it had a nice pitch...beyond my abilities for now.

The temperature was in the single digits at the summit and my son and I took the "easy way down" to check on whether it was family friendly...the trails were quite mellow (and entirely doable for all except first-timers) but it was real windy and cold so that ended up being our only run from the top.

After lunch, my son and I sampled some of the intermediate trails from the Kangamangus HSQ while my wife and daughter kept doing laps off of Seven Brothers (which built up a long line by the PM). I didn't get to all of the trails but those that I went on were real nice intermediate cruisers...nice width with enough rolls and twists to make things interesting. For the most part, my son and I kept to the singles lines so we never waited any more than 5 minutes.

Conditions all over were packed powder with the usual scraped bits in the PM...nothing significant, however. I saw some people going into the woods near the bottom of the East Basin double but didn't see how well the cover was. Crowd factor was high (lodges were packed) but if we went on the intermediate trails there weren't quite as many people. The trail under the Seven Brothers lift was surprisingly sparse...I'd guess that labeling the trail as a blue (even though it could be a green IMO) kept the novices off.

I didn't get a full run of the area by any means but that's what I've come to expect from first-time family trips...I can't speak for the more difficult runs but there are a lot of nice trails for the novice to intermediate skier at Loon. Unfortunately, going to a mountain that appeals to the masses makes for big crowds...:???: I'd guess that Loon is best appreciated midweek.
