LINCOLN, New Hampshire — Loon Mountain will celebrate its independence from Mother Nature Saturday, January 14 through Monday, January 16. This annual Loon tradition, which started more than 15 years ago, is a weekend-long celebration to recognize Loon's snowmaking team and their ability to cover the mountain with fresh snow. With a variety of special events scheduled, Independence Weekend is a festival for all ages that is sponsored by Snapple and Budweiser.
The celebration kicks off Saturday afternoon with snowcat rides from 4:30 - 6:45 p.m. and a Budweiser après ski promo in Babe's and the Paul Bunyan Room for those over 21. On Saturday night the mountainside will light up with a torchlight parade and fireworks outside the Governor's Lodge beginning at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, Uncle Sam joins the festivities on the mountain from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Uncle Sam is a 10-foot-tall, true American symbol of independence, who might even ski. In addition to Uncle Sam visiting the slopes, Mo the Clown will be inside the Governor's Lodge providing entertainment for all from 1 - 4 p.m. For those looking to relax after a long day on the slopes, Budweiser will again sponsor an après ski in Babe's and the Bunyan Room.
Loon is a leader in New Hampshire when it comes to pumping snow on the slopes. Since the addition of one of the New England's largest pump stations in 1993, Loon has added more than 175 tower guns. The pump station has the capability of pumping 7,000 gallons of water per minute while each tower gun on the mountain can throw out 60 gallons of crystallized water molecules per minute.
"The advantage of the tower gun, other than the superb snowmaking, is it allows us to place them in stationery positions around the mountain," said Ralph Lewis, Director of Operations at Loon. "This allows our snowmakers to focus on other key areas on the hill using the ground guns and fan guns."
