Loon Sat and Sunday Jan 6th and 7th
Date Jan 6 and & 7
Conditions everything ever seen by man/spring in Jan 45F Sat 36 Sunday
Temps all over the place
Crowds none
Friday night I went to bed and it was 31 F at the condo. It was 63 when I left Bost at 4pm
I talked to a friend from thorton and it was 50F at his house at night Friday. Just depended on where you were.
I got up at 6.30 to pouring rain. I packed the night before. Good move. We were on the road at 7.15. It was foggy and raining and just ugly.
I arrived at Loon before 8 to a slight shower, but nothing heavy. Got right on the Kanc quad and dropped my son off at his progam and headed to the North Peak to try lower Flume. About 1/2 the trail covered, but covered well. The snow was soft on the upper part, but firm on the lower. Just great to do another trail. Walking boss top to bottom was fine. Actually quite good. A sign went up for race training so I moved on to Speak Easy and Rampasture and Coolidge st for a new run for the year. Looked like we had some wind. All sorts of pine peices on Speak easy, but soft good snow. Upper Rampasture was in real nice shape. The lower part was not open. I could not even tell snow had been made on it till Sunday, cause about 10 feet of visability is all I had. Coolidge street was a mix of dirt, water bars loose granular, rocks ice, soft packed. No real way to discribe it other than it was open sort of. I see why the race was cancelled.
I then did some top to bottm run cause no one was around. Picked Rock top to botton was fine. Flying fox was thin on the danger corner, but Cross cut was fantastic. Alot of soft snow a few laps on that.
As usual the best lower mtn runs were lower picked and Blue ox. Good coverage in most place on picked, no thin spots at all on Blue ok. Still no visability. I went to watch my sons snow board even in front of Governors around 11.30 it started to rain again, By 1.30 the sun was out. It was 45 before the sun came out, but the sun was on the back side of the mountain, so it did not heat up to much.
Lower Bear Claw and Coolidge street, were marginally open IMO, but they were skiable. Bear Pause was also open so the cut over to the east basin, was no longer a civil war.
It was like skiing in may rain, sleet, fog, sun we had it all.
I had a blast.
Sunday. It started pouring around 10pm on Sat. Se here we go again. 45 F at 11pm. 32F at 6.30am Sunny a little breezy. Condtion Death cookies to start. Soft wet packed spring like after 10am.
Skiing was better Sat weather was better Sunday.
Got to Loon early. Followed the same pattern as normal. Hit Flume and Walking Boss, death cookies everywhere. Took about an hour to soften up. Picked rock was about as good as it has been all year. Soft and easy. Hero snow. The bare spots around became more clear than Sat, cause you could see the ground. I saw that a little snow had been made on lower Rampasture during the week and guns were set up on lower Angel st and and Upper rum runner and Upper Flume. We'll see it they get turned on. Blue ox was still fantastic. Trail holds the snow well. Lower bear claw was near critical mass in some sections.
I quit around 1 to watch the Pats game.
Overall....its all about the snow makers. They really did a good, job and I had a fantastic weekend. So while some of you were golfing or worried about the weather. Some of us were having a great Spring ski weekend. Take what we have and enjoy it. Winter to show up later this week.
