Resort or Ski Area: Loveland, Colorado

Conditions: P--48 inch base, high winds and moderate snow.

2010-2011 Report #: Day 7

Trip Report: Day two with the Mrs. I had raved about how great Loveland was and was looking forward to showing her around. We had a 2 for 1 coupon because of our Party VIP status. :smirk:

Things were cold, but really started out about the same as we did a warm up spin off Lift # 1:

From there it got cold and really, really windy. We made our way to Lift 9. No pictures because the hurricane winds made it downright nasty. Somehow we struggled off the summit. White out conditions.

Lift #4 offered no reprieve. The winds were nasty. All of the above treeline stuff I had skied was just too brutal to handle. So we made our way to Lift # 8 and dropped below the trees to enjoy the pow:

I took Jenn into The Plunge and the In the Mood for some bowl skiing. All the snow was being blown into that bowl:

We skied Chet's Run to The Face down to I-70 and then hiked the skier tunnel under the interstate to the base area. The Face was a steep, narrow, bumped up chute to the side of I-70.

Though both of us enjoyed the pow, we were cold, tired, and frustrated at how fast the weather turned. So we fueled up before heading back out:

Lift #6 offered somewhat of a reprieve, although the top was quite exposed. We hit some great snow in the trees and side trails.

The Mrs. was just too tired and cold so she went in and I did three runs down Lift # 1 hittting Richard's Run and then a steep run down Avalanche Bowl to Zoom. We're talking really steep....very similar to Shock Wave at Sunday River's White Cap:

It was steep, deep, and really fun to ski. No ice or rocks like on the east coast!

Knee wobbling steep actually!

We left at about 3pm to head home. One last look at Lift # 1:

The drive down I-70 was slow and the road was snowcovered until Silver Plume. From there down to Denver the roads were just wet and traffic was much better. Traffic heading into the mountains was slowed to a crawl. A few hours later they closed the Eisenhower Tunnel because of idling traffic. The drive is amazing for those that haven't done it. A real engineering feat.

The take home about Loveland is that it is cheap, friendly, huge, and clean. From what I have seen it is Colorado's Burke Mountain, only without the financial problems. But watch the weather and pick your days. Wind is a real problem there.
