The glaring goof? Jay Peak's sinking to No. 18 overall in the East. Behind Seven Springs, Pa.? Puh-leez.

Vermont may be the best ski state in the East, but I don't think that the SKI mag poll has anything to do with it... ;)

MRG dissed by Ski

It was pretty interesting to see that Mad River Glen did not crack the top 10 of any of the Ski Mag categories, especially in light of the fact that in years past we owned many of these categories. Not to be ranked in the top 10 in terrain/challenge is criminal. Anyone who has ever had a MRG burger knows we should be in that top 10 list too. Always cooked to order, never frozen and less than $5. I'll admit we probably shouldn't be on the top 10's for grooming, but hey we get the same darn snow as our friends at Sugarbush and they came in 8th for snow. Maybe they mean that artificial stuff, that fad will never catch on! :D Whatever!

I really think it is a reflection of the mag's changing demographic - notice their new mountain real estate mag. Also notice articles in this issue about How to Pack for a Ski Vacation, Dressed to Chill- Style matters in Aspen, How to Rent the Right Ski House, Heli Skiing - Yes you can handle it, etc... Yikes, is the the state of our industry? Yup it is, at least this large segment of it! The fact is many skiers today are more interested in ancillary activities, real estate investing and shopping than they are about skiing. While I am certainly bummed we were not included in the lists I am pretty darn confident that there are enough skiers that appreciate the Mad River Glen experience for what it is. Interestingly this is the same magazine that wrote one of the best features I have ever seen about Mad River Glen last year, so I probably shouldn't complain. Perhaps we'll have to get an early jump on a write-in campaign for next year. Any MRG skiers out there interested in standing up for Mad River Glen's absence from the Ski Mag ratings should email opinions to liftlines@skimag.com . I'd do it myself, but that might appear biased.

All it means is that the MRG ad budget wasn't entirely poured into SKI this season.

My marketing budget couldn't pour I don't even think I could get it to drip!

I hear Eric pays MRG to be their Marketing Director....

While it isn't quite true I really do consider myself one of the luckiest boys in the world! In many ways I feel like the groundskeeper at Fenway Park(I'm really a Yankee fan though!). It is truly a privilige to work for the Co-op and to promote something I am so passionate about. Hope everyone is getting psyched to ski, I know I am!!!!

Shhh... guys... Don't tell Eric about those bumper stickers that say "Holiday Valley Ski it if you can".

As for the survey, and why Mad River did so badly, how many Mad River regulars sent in the survey?

Was it even in the magazine? I get Ski, but never saw it. My guess is that it was split up with 32 pages of ads in between.

Lostone, they mail it seperately. It takes awhile to complete. I did it the last 2 years, but didn't feel like it this season. The first year I did it was online, since then it's been snail mail.

Well put. "The Industry" is many things that MRG fortunately is not. So much of the industry has less and less to do with skiing and riding and more about real estate and retail.

Ski showed up in my mailbox yesterday. (I've never paid for it and likely never will.) I'll take it to work today. Sounds like it'll be good for a couple laughs.

SKI MAGAZINE

The criteria that are used to select the "10 Best" are certainly not mine.

I think I said it pretty well in this post on Okemo:
"Those are the kinds of improvements that don't interest me in the slightest. They invariably cause an increase in ticket prices without making the actual skiing any better. In fact, as is already the case at Stratton, and increasingly so at Okemo. It is getting physically more difficult to get from my car to the lifts. I take that as a sign that they really don't want me to come and actually ski. They want me to sleep, eat, drink, work out, buy overpriced gear, get a seaweed wrap, a massage, and generally leave money behind; oh yes and when I have given them enough money, I can slide around on that nice corduroy (sp?)."

BUT: If attracting people who desire these types of "upgrades" increases profitability and allows ski areas to stay in business, then those of us who primarily go to a mountain to ski are winners too. I just work harder to find ways of cutting costs in terms of lodging and food. BTW, the food at most (not all) areas is deplorable. So, I don't buy the overpriced "bio-hazard" cuisine anyway.
