Just got a notice from the State of Maine looking for me to file a 2005 State Income tax return.

In bold at the bottom:

Failure to resolve this matter could result in Maine Revenue Services issuing a notice of assessment for outstanding tax in the amount of $2228.00 plus applicable interest and penalties

Um, I moved to Maine on 12/30/2005, never worked a day in the state in 2005. However, because in February of 06 while living there when I filed my federal return AND state return for Vermont (where I lived and worked for all of 2005), they assumed I must have had some Maine income tax. Gotta be some money we can take from that man somewhere.

Me to the tax man: You = Fail. Which they agreed that they made a mistake and are sending me confirmation of the mistake in writing.

The biggest reason why I left Maine is the taxes. No where have I lived are there bigger damn crooks. yet, the man still comes after me.

Pro tip for the tax man: Check your freaking records. It will save both you and me time. kthnx

States are hard up for money. CT increased fees on just about everything. It now costs twice to go the beach, state parks. ect. Irony at its worse: "Do a CT staycation! Oh wait...you can't afford that either!" Hunting licensing..fishing licenses..driver's licenses. It's nuts.

Kinda wish this clowns operated like a normal household. You don't spend more than you have. If you do, you start seeing what you own disapear.

I've always though grabbing more money from tax payers was like this: "Boss, I suck at financial management. I blew my entire paycheck. It's now a week before the next pay day. I need an advance on my next check..and a raise. Remember, pay me more becuase I can't manage my finances."

Unreal but unfortunately very believable . Imho this is yet another sample of just how far we've regressed in the quality of the workforce today. Quality Assurance seems like a hollow promise

Too many "empty vessels" in responsible positions , and we as educators and parents have contributed mightily to this problem by social promotion and self - esteem building and rewarding poor or mediocre performance a la " good job buddy" or lavish praise for walking and chewing gum simultaneously , or C level work or for an 0 for 73 performance at the plate or whatever.

Sorry for the rant -- just seem too damn much of this over the last 25 yrs and we're living with the result

My tax guy left off my 1st mortgage interest on my 2007 return. I was wondering why I owed that year, but had some stock options that I sold and thought they did not withhold enough. I was gathering things for 08 and I looked at the schedule A and noticed that the number was less then I added this years mortgage interest(1st and 2nd). WTF? I filed a 1040X in April, got a letter in July saying that I needed to file a new corrected Schedule A. I call last month and I have a resolution until 10/28.

They want there money fast, but ...........

$20 to go to the beach now, at least you will have plenty of room since they will probably be empty next year

And I just LOVE how they passed these fee increases less than a month after they finally passed the state budget and realized that they didn't have enough revenue   :smash: Rant done

Up until this year, we used to get a "Property tax rebate" in NJ. So I would have to over pay my property taxes, then a few months down the road, I'd get some of it back. So NJ would employ a bunch of clerks and accountants just to process the rebates.

Did anyone ever think of looking at the efficiency of that? Hell no. Now I don't even get the money back. NJ sucks sometimes.

Similar situation in NY: Property Tax rebates vanish , registration and license fees increase , new mandatory license plate after this yr , State park fees , fishing licenses and a multiplicity of nuisance fees initiated, yet they spend major buckos on pork barrel crap -------------------shameful .

And to add to the insanity the NYS Senate sat on its fat ass for over a month as the republicans and 2 rogue dems attempted a coop d'etat", which resulted in all those bloated pigs getting paid , plus they also got their travel and per diems and lulus in addition , while NONE of the people's business was done ---- simply outrageous .

I will vote for NO Incumbent in NYS this yr or in the next general election

How about this one. 7 NJ State Troopers have been collecting FULL paychecks for the past 22 months and not working because they are suspended pending a rape allegation. Prosecutors in two different counties have deemed the case "un-prosecutable". Yet the NJSP is determining if internal charges of Conduct unbecoming of a Trooper should be filed against them.

I'm paying for this??? I'm with Warp. Get rid of the incumbents.

Obviously, you've never lived in New Jersey, the most corrupt state in the Union. :smash:

New Jersey could have a Cayman Islands tax policy and I still wouldn't want to live there. I have a hard enough time admitting that I work for a company based there. :spin:

I really think this is KEY ! Politics is . not supposed be LIFE long career ! Incumbents are consyantly running for office and serving only THEIR personal vested interests NOT fT

Term limits are the answer BUT to FORCE that change via a state constitutional changes we as voters must abandon the notion that " OUR GUY is OK so i'll vote for him bcuz it's the rest of the bastids in the legislature that are the problem " .

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck and act s like a duck ------------- ITS A DAMN DUCK so throw the bums out and let them all get REAL jobs

Actually, states do operate like a normal household. Just about every state mandates a balanced budget in their state constitution. The difference is that you can't just walk in to your boss and announce that you are having financial problems so he has to give you a 50% raise. States tend to raise taxes and fees right after the general election hoping the voters forget by the time the next election rolls around.

</mild political content>

I've run into that "You owe us a bajillion dollars in state taxes for a year I didn't live in the state" thing several times. I've had the misfortune of having a NH boat in a Massachusetts harbor for a week around July 4th. Mass tries to claim that any boat in their waters on the 4th of July owes taxes. The statute says "60 consecutive days".

They offer counseling for that. It helps.

The really scary/weird thing is that there are plenty of places in Jersey that if it wasn't for the taxes would be very nice places to live. Once you basically get West of 287 and 10 to 15 miles away from AC and Trenton.

My parents moved to (and after 8 years and a job transfer later left) Jersey back when I was in college. Lived out off I-78 in Hunterdon County maybe 40 miles from NYC/20 miles from the PA border, and it was an absolutely beautiful area to live in (until I saw what my parent's property tax bill was )

This is what happens when you tie your revenue stream to sales and use taxes in a country with a very volatile economy. Budget and expand when times are good but crap hits the fan when times are bad. Governments get crap if they over tax and run a surplus but then when they run out of money when times go sour then constituents get unhappy.

This has nothing to do with the tax man. It has everything to do with how we setup our economic system. We have built an economic system that lives for big ups and downs that keep getting higher and lower. But we have governmental revenue systems that need consistency (especially long term between various political swings back and forth across the isle). Does not work very well together.

I don't blame states for pressing hard for back pay revenue. And if you get a letter, it is likely an automated letter based on various potentially suspicious warning signs. Given how many people cheat on their taxes, I am AOK with a few innocents having to throw away letters that are mis-directed. Sorry, DHS, but I can't feel your pain on this one.

I had the federal government come after me this year...

I got a letter that said 'you owe us $38,400 (or so) in taxes from '08 due to income you didn't report.'

I had gotten a 1099 for some work I did as a Fencing referee. I made $890.00 and that's what the 1099 said. Somehow the IRS interpreted that as $89,000.

I, of course, called them on it, sent them a copy of the 1099 and my return, and they dropped it, but it was kind of scary to open an official letter and see 'please pay an order of magnitude greater than what is currently in your checking account'.
