I drove up to Stratton yesterday and on the way I saw this old ski hill, I believe it was called Maple Mountain or something like that, they were advertising a chair that ran 4000'. It looked run down, and there was absolutely no snow anywhere.
Kinda sad to see this.

I'm sure that if enough interest was there, someone could set up a cooperative ownership, raise funds, and open the mountain in less than 5 years. Let's say 2.5 million to buy, upgrade lifts and lodges, add trails, and open. Everything looks in decent shape. That's $500,000 a year. 500 people donating $1000. Maybe open it as a state facility like Belleayre in NY, or at least have it partially funded. You would have all that donated money as a loyal skiier base, and obviously new people would frequent it. Have "membership" levels, and since it was a cooperative, everyone who donated a large sum would have an equal say in the running of the mountain. Who's in :)?

I have to be the bearer of negative news but the place is in real bad shape. The lifts are in need of a total overhaul, the rental fleet is probably full of mouse droppings, and the grooming fleet is pretty much a total loss. This has been discussed on the NELSAP forum. http://www.snowjournal.com/page.php?cid=topic8275

But its fun to dream aint it? I thought the same thing when I saw the pic of thir rental fleet. Yikes.

But it is fun to think about it..

After all, not too long ago, Crotched was in worse shape then that. :)

I believe they where closed for 14 years...

Course, I still want to see them clean up and open the other side of the mountain. I hear the old lifts are actually still there... LOL

It's cool to think about.. isn't MRG a cooperative or something (I'm a boarder so it's sort of taboo to talk about MRG isn't it...)?

It would be fun to reopen a lost ski area, but if I were to have to choose I would want a place where the lifts were at least close to turnkey. Scotch Valley in Stamford NY is a place that I would like to see operate again. Not sure on the status of thier lifts but they do mow the trails every year. The timeshare operation there is still active. Maple Valley just seems a little to far gone for my taste.
