Anyone ever ski it? I've driven over the notch through there countless times, but have never stopped in to try it. From the road, there looks like some nice natural terrain features and they certainly get a fair amount of snow.

Dartmouth, Yes. Middlebury, No. Have always been curious. I don't think there's much for steeps, but it seems to have a lot in the esthetics department.

I'm Middlebury class of 2003. Skied there a handful of days...great place. 1,000 vert or so...two doubles and a triple chair. The Bailey Falls area is nice. Hit this place after a dump and it's great :D NO crowds, cheapest place to ski in VT on a weekend or holiday. NEW lodge. The problem is that it is at the wrong elevation....when it's raining in the Champlain Valley, it rains up there as well. But when it snows, it snows like hell. Tough to get to if the roads are nasty. :x

The snowmaking is limited...coverage only on the racing trails and beginner area. Narrow NE terrain rules the day here. Great steep stuff with some good rolls. Check out the nasty double fall-line on Allen (front and center on the mtn). REAL nasty. :x Many of my racing buddies have stories about it.

Bailey Falls area is really, really outback. It is so remote and the terrain is cool, but you need snow for it. The Worth Mountain Double has a real hairy liftline (read: cliffs and OB). The Bailey Falls Triple has some cliffs as well that folks do poach.

Glades are meh...OK...not great, but they're not bad.

So give it a try...wait until you have snow...new lodge, great crowd, etc. Not many people...cheap :D

I've skied there a bunch. A nice little hill. There's a pitch on Allen that, while short, is among the steepest you'll find in new England. Often it's well rimed with the Green Mountain glaze - rolling over it on a butt-cold day can be quite a rush if your edges aren't in top tune.

I narrowed my final choices for college down to 2 finalists among those institutions that accepted my application:

Dartmouth & Middlebury.

Anybody want to venture a guess as to what was the most important factor in my choice of schools to consider?

Hint: it had nothing to do with academics  .

I had done that too, but ended up going to a state college when my dad got laid off two days before my graduation from HS. I had planned to go to New England College (with Pat's Peak next door),the state college was just about 1/4 the cost. That was many years ago now.

If I got your hint, with Middlebury's proximity to MRG and Sugarbush - the decision seems like a now brainer.

Interesting; actually, Dartmouth got the nod because it's a little closer to Mt. Washington. I guess my hint threw you off a bit.

Well, as I'm the same class as thetrailboss I'd have to plugg Midd as well. After all it was a short step from school @ Midd to working for the Glen.

Cheers,
-Neal

Truth be told I don't think you could go wrong in either school. What you what to study should factor into this and that is....?

Very true...I loved both schools and would have been happy at either one.

What I wanted to study seems like an important question now, but it wasn't then.

Actually, it was important; I wanted to study skiing. But that didn't help me make the choice since both schools have their own ski areas.
