I wouldn't call the "turns" most people are making out there anything close to a giant slalom turn... Going straight, throwing in some half-assed skid that sort of gets you going in the other direction, repeat as necessary does not equal a "giant slalom turn".

I think we might be talking at cross purposes, here. When I use the term "giant slalom," I do not mean it as a good or desirable thing.

Good skiers on 205's makes good bumps , not machines outer limits never saw a groomer in the late 70's and very early 80's and the were great bumps. I just wish my body could handle it today.

Reason for machines? As the man said, "you can't buy a mogul turn". We live in an era where the majority of skiers can buy other types of turns.

I disagree with this. Yes good skiers with 205's made nice bumps back in the 80's but if you have a cat driver who knows lay down a nice set of seeded bumps you've got gold. I never studied the effects of the new skis (ie shorter skis) on natural bumps. No one I know of skis on 205's anymore outside of Super G racers. I do remember Winter Park not allowing anything under 185's on certain mogul trails back in the day. Seeded bumps are a great ride and key to places that can't rely on too much natural snow.

Good skiers make good bumps! I think ability level of the skier is more critical to the process than ski length (although better skiers generally have longer skis).

Killington's conditions report says they have bumps on Cascade. Hopefully they are still around this weekend.

One thing is for sure, moguls don't form as quickly as they once did. Turn shape and ski sizes have changed the game. Cliff at Hunter had great bumps this weekend.

Good skiers do not make good bumps. At least not in the past 15 years. Good skiers don't skid on groomers. Good skiers don't make checked turns on groomers unless they're really steep. How do you suppose RR tracks or scarves, whether long or short radius, create bumps? They don't. Unless you guys still think good skiing is feet nailed together making skidded turns?

Throw in a foot of fresh and sure, good bumps will form. But, that just doesn't happen that often at many areas. Where it does, many of the skiers consider bumps to be a bad thing and only want powder. Most trails south of N VT usually start as man made super hardpack. So to me it's a great thing that we have little areas like Belleayre and Blue manufacturing bumps.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I found where all the bumps are hiding: they are at Sugarbush. At least they are today. Lots of nice, tight bumps, including some really nice low angle stuff that you can really let 'em rip on. Presumably these bumps must have been made by newbies and their nice, tight snowplow turns... ;). No, wait a second... Those people are all on Stein's making it look as crappy as it was the last time I saw it. I'm going to go ahead and assume these bumps were made by good skiers who made nice, tight turns in the same place over and over again...! ;) ;)
