Trip Report:
It was a nice, warm and sunny day out there on Friday. It was my first trip back to Mohawk since I was a kid and had a friend taking the Learn To Ski lesson. The conditions were good for a cruiser type day -- machine groomed and lots of corduroy on every trail (for most of the day). Unfortunately, not a bump in sight so I wasn't able to work on that (and god knows I need work on that.. Oh yeah.. Greg and Brian know too! :smile
. The place was empty until the school kids started getting out and that was my queue to leave. Let's put it this way, the lift stopped 4 times or more on my last three runs to the top. On a mountain where it only takes 1 minute from top to bottom, it can get old fast.
My friend didn't give a positive review for the Learn To Ski program at Mohawk. It is supposed to be an 1.5 hour lesson. We found out this is only true if there are 3 or more people in the class but it's only a 1 hour lesson with 2 or less. Well, there were two, and the other kid wasn't getting it. The instructor never even took them up the bunny hill and the entire hour was spend side-stepping up about 20 feet and back down again. I am sorry, but it just isn't too fair to cut the lesson down a half hour unless it is completely private. Needless to say, I had to put my instructor cap on and work with him on the bunny hill for a few hours. After he had some things to work on and I saw he was getting it, I would go up to the top, do a bomb run and then back to the bunny to give him the next logical step.
All in all, I had fun. The mountain is pretty small so I was able to hit most of it in the hour my friend was in the lesson. I might head back up there at some point, but I think I can say I like Sundown better by a long shot.
