Time Skied: 3:40pm to 8:15pm
Weather: VERY COLD - in single digits, no wind, very clear and sunny (before the sun set)
Conditions: machine groomed and ice
Two words can describe this evening - Cold and icy. The temperatures were very cold and I needed to bundle up a little bit! Fortunately, there was no wind so I only had to come into the lodge once to warm up for a couple of minutes. There was no one there. Only a couple schools were there and there were no lift lines, even without the Arrowhead Triple Chair running. Conditions were almost the worst of the season. Everything that was groomed (the main trails) was very hard pack and ice pellets. It was kind of hard to turn on, even though I could find some leftover corduroy. I tried to find some loose snow, but it was nearly impossible. Everything that was not groomed (certain trails and the trees) was a sheet of ice. The reason for these poor conditions is because of the ice/rain storm that Mohawk got last Friday (2/21) that encased all of the powder in an icy mess. I went down the upper part of Route 100 twice (under the Mohawk chair lift line) which they did not groom. It was very icy and had moguls. This meant that you could not turn much, could not stop, and had a high chance of falling. Additionally, the glades to the left of Mohawk and around Deer Run were also sheets of thick ice, making it almost impossible to turn and avoid trees. Out of the non-night skiing trails, the best was Chute. As night came, Wildwood became the best run as I could find on loose snow and no ice at all. Too bad they had to get that ice .
Friday evening gets a B-.
