Most expensive ski homes

Even if I had Bill Gates money, I'd still have a ski place in New England and it would likely be in Stowe. New England is home and I wouldn't want to get on a plane every time I wanted to go skiing. There's also all of my friends and family in New England whom I'd want to entertain for a ski weekend or just a visit to the mountains for a non-skier. Easy for friends and family to coordinate and head up to Stowe for a weekend. Getting on a plane to Montana for the weekend? Not so much.

I'd for sure chase a few storm systems out west or in Europe each winter and likely ski once a summer in South America, but I'd still be skiing in New England more than anywhere else.

Now with Bill Gates money you'd have a private jet, and could be skiing in Jackson in the same amount of time it would take you to drive to Stowe.

Fuck you money means you can still have Christmas dinner with the family and be skiing out West the same day.

So I don't believe you would only ski the East Coast, no one would assuming Bill Gates cash.

More to the point of this thread, the cheapest house in Jackson right now is 600k. Thats a tear down. Currently there are over 16 pages of listings on realtor.com before you get to a house under 1 million. Most expensive doesn't show (The Walton Ranch, 2 miles of Snake River frontage and 1500 acres of the best tax shelter you can buy in America), for 66 million. Cheapest house (NOT EVEN SKI IN/OUT) in Teton Village is over 3 million right now.

Hence why I will be moving home, it is physically impossible to own a home here as a working stiff.

You have a real challenge with reading comprehension. I said I'd chase a few storms each winter out West, but would likely still ski more in the East. I didn't say I would only ski the East.

Same applies to you, considering my overall point was with that much money, your whole notion of spending time near family or closer to home is a moot issue, you'd be able to buy them houses wherever you wanted to go if you so desired and fly them there on a private jet.

But considering its a hypothetical you can continue to act the common man and contradict the whole premise of having a ton of cash but not spending it to look better.

Get over yourself Voltaire. You're not so smart as to figure out what you think other people would do with that kind of cash. You sure as shit don't know me well enough to even assume to know what I would do with that kind of money.

You moved to Jackson? Your realize you picked one of the most expensive areas in the country! Also pretty much the most awesome both summer and winter. My understanding from talking to the locals is most live over the pass in Idaho or somewhere in nowheresville, WY generally 60+ minutes from the mountain.

I was listening to a older river guide/ski bum this summer. He said most ski bums don't last out there. They either get tired of working multiple jobs in poverty or they eventually die in some sort of skiing/rafting/climbing/whatever type of accident. He said he lost a lot of good friends to such fatalities. I can see how it happens - you ski everyday and typical inbounds stuff gets really boring.

I've been out here going on a decade now, I know/knew what I was getting into. You can make it work, but the whole concept of spending 750k for a livable place (a 70's split level ranch that would go for 150k back East) just seems like financial imprudence to me.

Also, Idaho is really only about 1/2 away, but over the mtn pass. Alpine and Star Valley are the Wyoming communities, and are about 45 minutes away.

Most of the injuries and/or deaths seem to come from the paragliding contingent. Which, like in Wedding Crashers, prompts the Will Ferrell "died in a handgliding accident, what an idiot" type reaction a lot.

Which is all the negatives you find here. Everything else is amazing.

At a mere $9.75 million this log home in Windham seems a bargain compared to those in the OP:
http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887323893504578559872245501026

"To create his dream cabin, Mr. Raphael traveled the country, taking photographs of log lodges at a number of national parks because he was enamored with the architecture. He then met with Jay Pohley, president of Pioneer Log Homes in Victor, Mont., and together, they came up with a design for the home, located in Windham, N.Y. The exterior features native stone and hand-peeled standing dead timber—trees that were killed by wildfire or disease and then harvested from their setting."

The most expensive houses are houses I will never be able to afford, but I will keep dreaming about the one in Stowe.

As much as I love New England, if I had that kind of money I can't imagine buying a ski home here. It'd have to be out west somewhere. I'd rather fly out and back every weekend and not have to deal with big crowds, quickly tracked out snow, icy conditions, etc. Then again, if I had that kind of money, why not say, a condo at Stowe, and a house in CO, CA, or Utah.

Actually, I don't think I'd bother buying a place. I'd rather fly first class, stay in 5 star accomodations, and follow the snow to wherever it's dumping heaviest.

I love daydreaming about these things...

Sounds pretty nice. Breck is definitely a sweet spot, and the town is awesome for apres. Yeah, I could fox with that.

My friend got a new job a while back that requires him to travel a lot, and he works from home when he's not traveling. So he moved to Park City, got an apartment basically on the mountain, and has been living it up like the asshole he is ever since. I'd really hate him if he hadn't given me an open invitation to stay with him anytime I want. Actually, I still hate him a little.

I fell in love with Tahoe a few years ago. I came really close to moving. Snowboarding in the winter. Fishing, wakeboarding, mountain biking, camping, and beach goodness in the summer. When the weather doesn't cooperate, hit the casinos. Yup, if I win powerball, I'm thinking a nice log cabin up high overlooking the lake is where I'll be. California side, of course, so I can grow my own medicine.
