Mount Snow 12-2-2016

Report: Seeing that I needed a mental health day, I figured, I would hit up Mount Snow today. Man they lost a lot of coverage, but the snow crew did a great job preserving what was left. They also opened up Little John too, to add to their trail count. With the weather finally beginning to cooperate, they should be able to crank out the snow quickly. Legs still are not there yet, but getting better every day. Nobody was here though so I had the mountain to myself!

The 8:15PM report on 12/2 from across route 100 at 2200 ft (about 300ft above Mount Snow's base) - currently 33 degrees with enough of a snow squall to coat my back deck and obscure the view of any groomer and/or fan gun lights!

It was 36 at 5:30 when I rolled into the base area to stop at the Mount Snow Ski Club and pick up my kids alpine race team credentials for this season prior to day #1 of training tomorrow - the compressors from their air plant were humming away then and fan gun lights above roughly the top of Canyon Quad were visible - hoping for a good night of production tonight!!

And anecdotally, when I looked at the stream flow rate into Snow Lake when my son and I went to the Snow Barn for pizza and Fiddlehead Ales (for me atleast, not my soon to be 11yr old son ;-) ) the inflow rate was quite high, which bodes well for plenty of "ammunition" for the system the next week plus!!

Its been like 15 years since I've skied mount snow but I'm actually looking forward to finding a nice lazy midweek day and checking out that fancy bubble chair.

I also was at Mt. Snow on Dec. 7. They lost a lot of snow since Nov. 28.

I was pleased to see that their new trail map has the glades added back.

The snow that was there was adequate and offered great cruising. There were really 3 open runs: Long John (+ a few spurs), Cascade/Canyon and Rusty Nail on Carinthia.

There was also some reasonable beginner teaching terrain in the Launch Pad beginner area. There were very few people skiing there and at least half of them were on the park features on Rusty Nail.

I suspect that between snowmaking and some help from mother nature, the conditions will be improving for the weekend.

Question: While the Bluebird chairs appeared to be as good as new and IMO, it is still the standard of luxury for a trip up the mountain. I found the bubble to be scratched and cloudy(, and not from vandalism). I'm wondering: What are the maintenance issues associated with the bubbles - phrased another way, what is the projected lifetime of a bubble before it falls into the deferred maintenance category?

They were making some "base building" snow on the upper roughly 1/3rd of Freefall this morning - the wet nature of the snow had more to do with the marginal temps at the time than anything else (that's why I presume all of Freefall wasn't lit up this morning) - once it got skied in, it was nice creamy snow and below that was firm, machine groomed snow that skied pretty well.

When I quit about lunch time, the temps were dropping, and they were turning on guns on many trails at all but the lowest of elevations by the time I left to drive home to CT about 2:30.

My wife, who's still up at Mount Snow with our kids right now, tells me that she can see the fan gun lights all the way down to the base now.

By Monday, they should be done resurfacing Freefall, River Run will likely also be open on the Northface, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're starting up on either chute or plummet on the Northface.

They're also working on Ridge on the main face as well as Nitro and Inferno at Carinthia for likely Monday openings if the forecasted temps play out

This week should be good for both snow au natural and the guns. I can see a lot of expansion happening.
