Mount Sunapee - 2/6/2010
Date(s) Skied: Saturday, 2/6/2010
Resort or Ski Area: Mount Sunapee
Conditions: Hard Pack / Packed Powder
Trip Report:
Went up to Sunapee for on Saturday. The weather was amazing and the mountain skied very well. The conditions were mostly hardpack with a little packed powder on the surface which, of course, got skied off as the day wore on so it ended a bit scratchy. On the flip side, it was VERY predictable so it wasn't one of those situations where you carry too much speed and have a surprise when you go around the corner. It was the same surface the whole way down so it was easy to get in a groove.
I haven't skied Sunapee in a very long time (before my decade long hiatus), so it was a pleasure to get back on that mountain. I really like the trails and the views are always beautiful there. Actually, I have hiked that mountain more times than I have skied it because I love the views in the summer so it was great to get there with snow on the ground.
The glades were all closed due to the lack of snowfall in the area, but I only saw one 'normal' trail closed. The lift lines moved quickly and the traffic on the trails was low to moderate for a Saturday afternoon. There was a short power issue with one of the lifts in the morning which caused a slight backup at the high-speed quad from the base. That was the one time we had bit of a wait, so we went up the quad and skied the Sunbowl area for a few runs. When we got back to the main face, the other lift was fixed so it didn't impact us at all after that.
The only downside of the day was that I actually paid full price. This was my first outing of the year where I paid a full lift ticket, but at the same time, Sunapee is still a value at $68 for a Saturday.
If you haven't hit Sunapee in a while, I recommend it. Great mountain. Great people. Great times!
