Resort or Ski Area: Mountain Creek, Vernon, NJ

Conditions: Hard pack, mostly white with some brown mixed in. Weather - about 35 degrees and cloudy, calm wind.

Trip Report: I skied MC from 12:45 - 2:45 this afternoon, while my son was in his half day kindergarten class, between dropping him off at the bus and picking him up. I would have gone to Hidden Valley but MC was the only local mountain open. The weather was nice, just cloudy, but I was hoping for it to be snowing but apparently the snow is holding off until later tonight. Only Vernon peak was open and the only trails with snow were Upper and Lower Horizon (green), the beginner area and Sayonara (a short blue that cuts off a turn on Horizon). South was closed because they say they are still having power problems related to the ice storm.

I just lapped these trails at high speed for 2 hours and probably skied over 10,000 vertical feet. The snow was what I'll call Jersey pavement, kind of like Pocono pavement but with a brownish tinge. It was fun but it would have been a lot more fun if there were more trails open, unfortunately all the rain, ice and warm weather have been taking its toll on the local ski areas.

Of course every time I ski there I remember what I don't like about MC - the super long walk from parking, the Cabriolet gondola (taking my skis off and putting them back on every run and walking on lots of pavement in my boots around the "lodge" and to the gondola. On the lift rides I also noticed that all the trees either had limbs borken off and some of the smaller trees had just cracked and fallen from the ice storm, apparently it was pretty bad on the mountains here in north Jersey too.

pavement more like concrete. got to the hill at 5:30 took two runs and bailed. MC is having serrious power problems they have lost all power to south and parts of north. they actually lost power to some of the lights in the base area. and at the top of the cab they had work lights on stands to light the unloading area. i did go get some slamming hot cocco when i went to check on my lake house. there was about 2 inches on the ground by the micky d's right before 80 in jefferson. none at the hill.
