Mountain Creek Sold?

I've been hearing grumblings that Mountain Creek has been sold back to Eugene Mulvihill (owner of Great American Recreation, and the original owner of Vernon Valley way back when). Any else hear anything about this? I can't find anything online, and I haven't been to MC much this season, but the days I was there I heard something from the ski patrollers about this possibly happening.

Hopefully Intrawest will take the tents with them. There was a thread on PASR about Intrawest selling off this or that.

I've heard mutterings along these lines for a couple of months now.

It appears to me that Intrawest has been liquidating properties for a couple of years now-to raise cash to fund what had to be done at Whistler/Blackcomb as an Olympic host site? (And what's being written is that the Vancouver games will likely lose a ton of money).

It makes sense that Mulvihill would come back to run the property he and his son ran (into the ground?) for so many years. The local whisper is that he was more than happy to no longer have any dealings with the powers that be in Vernon Township that blocked any efforts he made to improve the resort after he built the condos at Great Gorge Village. When he moved his act right down the road to Hardyston Township and they seemingly gave him carte blanche in his development of his spectacular golf courses and community at Crystal Springs, I thought he gave Vernon Twp the big F You.

There is no love lost between the Mulvihills and Vernon Township. I'd guess he'd have to get some major concessions and promises of tax breaks to set up business again there.

Funny this thread came up. when i was there wed and thurs it was mentioned more than a few times on lift discussions with other folks including a ski patrol guy. nobody seems to really know what's going to happen. Intrawest has been trying to raise cash to save itself... its been in the business section of a few papers recently. hope someone or conglomerate with good intentions takes over.

Intrawest is done. Bond holders are taking them to town.

Maybe the skiers will get the South side back!

Yes it really has caused an overcrowding at Vernon and South being underused and over-concentrated on (22ft quarter pipe of wasted snow? Red tail still closed with plenty of snow for over a month?). It's just all ridiculous. I had no problem with the park in Great Northern, I don't really mind missing that area and the boarders seemed to like it.

Nope there is still no open pipe. They wasted all that snow when they already had the $1 million earthworks in place at Vernon. I really hope the new ownership gets all that park crap out of there. And bring back some old trails! Moonspin? Oppossum? Devil's Way? Route 80? All intrawest did since buying the place was eliminate trails.

i have nothing against snow boarding.. my son is a good one.. but it has become punkville...no observation of the basic code .. downhill skiier has right of way... just dangerous... i had to smack a so called (in his words 14 year old more likely 10) in the head one day with my pole when he lit up a smoke and blew it back on me and my kids on the lift line.. no way.. he wasn't happy... to bad. had a few choice words for him. I'm ranting and shouldn't, i hate doing it, but it is an issue. i do have a season pass and most of these kids don't.

Rt 80 is intact it appears, and there's a bunch of cuts on Bear Peak they should open....

The trail under the Cabriolet NEEDS to be reopened...and getting rid of Oppossum seems like a horrible move. Oh, and there's Granite View as well to reopen.

While we're on it, find some way of switching that horrible "gondola" over to a 6 or 8-pack. (Is there an 8-pack?)

How about a 6 pack where the Gondola is and a high speed quad by the triple for crowded days? This is similar to the blue mountain setup. But that will never happen, and I agree with everything you said except Granite View. That trail is useless, good riddance.

Good idea. Remove all the terrain parks so the resort goes from behind extremely profitable to not profitable at all. Terrain Parks in general have saved smaller resorts like MC, etc. You oldschool skiers will never learn. Just like the dinosaurs, you've had your chance...the times have changed.

That plus invest millions in lift and infrastructure improvements.

Unfortunately however, there's been pretty much nothing done since a year or two after they bought the place....and they wasted a lot of money moving the pipe around and putting in the Cabriolet, which should be a normal HS lift.

Some obvious things:

MC's snowmaking is pretty poor, to say the least.
The Sojourn chair feels and looks unsafe.
The horrible set of bubbles that are considered a "lodge".
That hotel was one giant waste of money.

And I won't even start about the promised terrain pods between Granite and South that were supposed to be built.

I absolutly hate the cabriolet lift. It's one thing to have to take my skis off when getting on a Gondi in VT, but it's stupid to take them off for a 90 second lift ride followed by a 60 second run.
