Damn! 33 units. That's a lot of damage. Dunno what they cost but let's ballpark $250k each that's $10m of damage.

The fire started around 1 a.m. Monday at the Mountainside Condominiums. The resort says at least 33 units were destroyed as flames swept through the complex. It's not clear what started the fire.
A 1-year-old dog named Oakley is credited with saving lives. The Freeman family says they were sound asleep when Oakley alerted them that something was wrong.

Entire building looks to be a total loss. Hope it is adequately insured.

Who is willing to bet it was because someone did not put out their fire in their fireplace?

Mountain smelled with nasty smoke for the whole day (they canceled some kids program for that) Although fire started 1AM, lots of smoke were still coming out in the morning, and it seemed to have put out through the day, but then by the time we were leaving at the end of the day, not so thin smoke were still coming out of the place. Not sure why.

We could have been one of those people because that is the place we've been staying for last several years for this week, but this year we decided to go with style in a nice country inn since this is that last winter vacation with our son who is going off to college.

I once spent a weekend in a condo at SB with my brother in-law and his wife. They got there the night before me and had a fire in the fireplace. When I showed up the next morning they were out skiing. Before they went out they were nice enough to clean out the fireplace, put the ashes (embers) in a paper bag, and throw it in the trash. I walked in to a fire in the kitchen trash can!! WTF!

It was this incident plus another condo incident where a neighbor's flaming mattress ended up in the dumpster that made me vow to never buy a condo. Bottom line: people are idiots.

Yeah. my math sucks. first off condo are probably $150k on average not $250k. Then I rounded up to 40 units.

If 33 units are destroyed at $2m that is only $60k per unit. Doesn't that sound really low?

That would suck if you had plans to rent one of them over the next few weeks. Hard to find another place quickly.

Ha. I have a reservation for March 22-29. Hopefully I still get to go or get a full refund.

Bummer to hear about this, thankfully all got out alright. Wonder how much ski gear was lost.

What would be the first thing you grabbed after loved ones? Boots? Gloves? Jacket?

No luck up there this year. When I was staying at the Sugarbush Inn, the place caught on fire. That time was due to an idiot who couldn't use the butt can and tossed it aside and it fell under the framing. Caught the inside of the framing on-fire. Little damage but the place sure stunk.

No doubt...Sugarbush just can't catch a break this year.

I'm guessing that there weren't firewalls between the units in the condo.

Every few years, almost always during a busy vacation week when the renter percentage is usually high, some condo in the Mount Snow area catches fire due to ashes improperly disposed of. The last time it happened, if I recall 2 New Years Eve's ago (might of been 3) the firewalls installed in the condo building of the Greenspring Development where it happened kept the bulk of the damage to just the one unit where the fire started with only some minor smoke + water damage to the adjacent units

I dont like that the new condos being built only have gas fireplaces, but it is evidently a wise move. some people just cant be trusted with fire.
