Date(s) Hiked: 11-5-06

Trails(s) Hiked: Rocky Branch, Isolation, Davis

Total Distance: 14.6

Difficulty: Ardous

Conditions: Very muddy and wet in places, deep snow near the Isolation/Davis junction.

Special Required Equipment: Nothing really…

Trip Report:

This was my FINAL NH48 PEAK! Hooray! Long and wet is a nice description of this hike. It was necessary to do some bushwhacking to avoid a few of the nastier crossings. Also I tried some bushwhacking near the Isolation-Davis junction which did not turn out so well. I did however fall through the snow to my waist at one point (that’s 4 feet of snow) It was not this deep everywhere but it was in a few spots. There were some sections along the trail which were 2 feet deep! Quite a sight to see in early November!

Ooooo thats a good question. I do want to hit the Sugarloaf vicinity in Maine sometime but that wont be soon I think. I may just stick to some of the smaller peaks for a bit. I do have a hike or two planned down in the catskills but I don't know when I will follow through with it. There is a possibility that I will next weekend!

I guess I am feeling that effect now when you finally finish a major hurdle and stand there and think "gee, now what?" except its a bit more like I have some ideas, just not sure which path to go down right away.

Recommendations...

Backpack the Bigelows, staying in Avery col. Watch the sunset or sunrise from up there. Grab South Horn while you're up there for your NE100. Bee-yoo-tiful!

Day hike the Crockers and Redington. Yawn.

Spend 3 days backpacking the whole range of Saddleback, Horn, Abraham (side trail), Spaulding (side trail) and Sugarloaf (side trail). A night at Poplar Ridge Shelter and a night at Spaulding Shelter split the trip up nicely. One of the best backpacks I've ever done.

thanks for the heads up. I do not know if I will attempt this soon, or wait until spring. I am leaning towards spring. I did some research on the Bigelows a few days ago, looks like a real cool place :) In my current peak bagging plans I did infact integrate the NE100 peaks! I dont want to have to make more 200 mile trips than I have to :)

Congratulations, What's next? NE67, NE 100, Northeast 115, Catskill 35, 52 with a view, Trailwrights, NE 3000 Or make up your own list or a variation of someone elses.

The Saddleback Sugarloaf Backpack is a classic, While many people pick the Bigelows (they are nice) as the best Maine peaks outside BSP, I prefer Saddleback. I liked Reddington when I did it following the old roads & not the bushwhack.

If you are planning the five 4K's in VT remember from roughly May 1st Through Memorial Day, Camel's Hump & Mansfield are closed.

Ah, I already did the VT 5's actually before the NH48 :) finished that in August! I can't wait to do that whole section in Maine my thoughts revolve around taking a 4 day weekend or so, and bagging them all in one drive.

BSP is another story, that I am not doing until April-May or whenever.
