Wasn't sure what to expect for this overnighter. We had opted for this for our first overnight trip since we had only done one day trip a few weeks ago and was looking for something a bit more reasonable than the Tripyramids we were thinking of doing orginally. Saturday's weather cooperated with us that it wasn't too unbearably hot that we couldn't stand it. I was a little bit worried that it would be.

On the way up the Dicey's Mill Trail we crossed a nice brook to take a break, also so dog could get a drink. When we reached the area where there used to be a lean to, we scouted around for a good place to drop some stuff so we could continue on to the Passaconaway peak. It felt good to drop that weight. After we hit the peak and hung around for a while enjoying the view, we decided it was time to go hit the Whiteface peak.

When we stopped by our sleeping area, I was almost ready to call it a day. I was a bit tired from the climb up and down Passaconaway, but knew I really didn't want to do it the next day, as that would've made that the longer day. We wanted to be back at a reasonable time as we had other obligations. UK convinced me that we should give it try. I figured since I wasn't carrying anything, that I could probably handle it. Well I did, but not without a few issues. On the way up to Whiteface I got a blister on one heal and was getting a little sore in the quads. Then on the way down I could feel another blister developing on the other heal.

The other thing I was worried about was our dog, Suzy, she's no spring chicken, she's getting up there in years and I could tell she was starting to get sore too. We helped her over some difficult areas. All in all this wasn't a difficult trail, it's just that some of us don't get as much activity as we should and end up paying for it, oh well. There was some really beautiful sites from the Rollins Trail that took us up to Whiteface, but the peak there wasn't anything. The Rollins Trail looked out over a "bowl" area, very nice and pretty. I always get a feeling of appreciation that I'm able to hike to these senic vistas.

After we got back from that hike, I couldn't wait to get my boots off and rest. Suzy couldn't wait either. UK thinks I'm a softie when if comes to Suzy, maybe I am so I shared my supper with her, as well as her own food, she really likes that. On our hike out, Sunday, both Suzy and I were dragging pretty bad. About halfway back down Dicey's Mill Trail I noticed Suzy was having a really hard time and decided to take her small dog pack off her and carry it. We were both hobbling behind UK, but made it back happy. Just before we got to the car Suzy was pretty hot so she went into the stream beside the road for cooling off and a drink. So we're home resting.

Sounds like you guys did not go as far as South Whiteface, maybe .2 from the summit which is hard to determine. South has the best views in the area, IMO, overlooking the ledges & looking south at the Lakes.

Sounds like you had a great time!

Sounds like a good hike. But it's a good thing you chose the Camp Rich site and not either of the other two removed shelters (Camp Heermance and Camp Shehadi) as neither of them has a good water source. That's part of the reason they were removed.
