I spent the afternoon at Mt Peter with my will-be-6-years-old-next-week son yesterday. We were two of what was no more than 25 people on the hill until the after-school crowd started to arrive around 4PM. I must say that for a tiny (400' vertical) ski area with but a working double chair and learner area rope tow, the snow coverage was pretty good. Soft, machine-made covered all the trails-all 9 (?) of them. I skied for an hour while my son had a lesson and wound up skiing every trail at least twice in that time. A couple of runs from the "summit" after ski school finished with my son and we mucked through the parking lot mud to call it a day.

All in all, a very nice beginner hill with a good family vibe and a palpable pride in what they're doing there.

 Me ans my wife skied that some years ago when we were first starting out. Great hill for learning, good vibe, good prices. :)

Yea...my all-day lift ticket was $10...just had to profess to being a member of some club.

Me: "Does AAA count?"
Ticket Seller: "Works for me."

Was Dynamite opened? That's a fun little steep trail.

I'll have to look at a trail map for trail names, but I don't recall seeing any trails being roped off.

The two or three trails on skiers left at the top of the hill definitely had some steepness for a couple of turns. And very good snow coverage for their pitch. In the time I was there, I concluded that not many people ski on those "diamond" trails, so them getting skied off hardly comes into play.

I've been to Mt. Peter 3 times this season so far with my son who will also be 6 next week. He loves it, he can ski a bunch of the trails from the top so there is nice variety for him. We have passes at Hidden Valley so that is where we go most of the time but I take him to Mt. Peter occasionally for some variety.

Mt. Peter gets a little crowded on weekends but they'll open up the chair all the way skiers right if the line gets too long at Haley's Comet and this is great for little kids since it accesses the easier terrain only. It seems they usually have better snow conditions than MC and HV, they seem to put a lot of care into their snowmaking and grooming. I was thinking of taking my son to Mt. Peter instead of HV next Tuesday 'cause he has the day off school. Maybe I'll stick with HV because I think it's a holiday week next week.

Now That's the direction they(AAA) should be moving! Would do more to increase membership in the NE than anything else..imho.

I think Mt. Peter is the best local ski area to NYC. It is so much better than Thunder ridge. They do a great job with snowmaking....they had fan guns well before Mt. Snow ever did!!!

I started my daughter out there a few years ago. The only reason we moved on to a bigger home mt. (Catamount) is the vertical. The runs were just too short as she progressed.

Mt. Peter is the oldest ski area in NYS. As said above, has a great, old school vibe, has a nice continuous vertical (albeit only about 400-450') and they do a great job with snow considering the place is but an hour from midtown Manhattan!

Skied there last year during a weekday and had a great time. Felt like I owned the place. I also think my "club" conversation with the lady at the ticket desk was exactly the same. They really just seem to want you to get out there and ski. Kind of a "we're open, you might as well use it" feeling.

I'd definitely go back there if I end up with a free weekday.
