Date Friday 2/11
Area Mt. Snow
Conditions Excellent. They had around ten inches of rather nice powder overnight from Thursday.
Report The day dawned cold and very windy, but I hit the Summit Quad at about 9:05. There were many untracked lines even down the main face because they had only groomed about half of each trail down the front. Glorious sunshine, but temps in 20's with high winds. Winds did let up about noon. I met a couple of young guys (late thirties) on my first ride up and ended up skiing with them until 3 PM without stopping. They were really excellent skiers and knew where all the powder stashes were on some of the more obscure trails through the woods. UNCLE was especially fun since it is narrow, and steep enough to keep you moving smartly in powder. We ended up "poaching" a few trails (like OLYMPIC after they opened the North side about noon) and got into powder up to our knees and deeper in spots. It was a rip! It was good for my ego that one of them "cried uncle" with leg muscle burn before I did. Young guys just aren't in the shape they used to be. The one negative was the fact that at about 10:30 they had only 4 lifts open for about 45 minutes to an hour due to high winds. On the other hand, it caused quite a few people to give it up, and when things reopened, we had very little traffic and got in a tremendous amount of vertical. Week-end skiing should be terrific (other than the crowds) for the poor folks who still work, etc..
