Oh man! Where did Route 9 get bad? We take 112 to Greenfield. Even in bad weather, it's a good alternative.

Short Report

I skiied Sat.Sun.Mon:

Saturday: A foot or so of the fluffiest, driest powder I've ever skied. Conditions were outstanding, the "snow philosophy" seems to be working well in guiding the grooming as they now have a whole set of trails designated "Natural" that they leave ungroomed until they get crusted by freezing rain. Run of the day for my son and I was Cut-Off . Shin deep powder for me, and waist deep for my son in places! Lift lines were short. My daughter went over to Fallen Timbers and reported nice bumps there. The snow was supposed to let up during the day Saturday, but did not. It snowed all through the day.

Sunday: I won the father of the year award: the mountain went from 40% open to 90% open overnight, my favorite trail ,Beartrap, opened, powder was everywhere, and I spent 2 hours with my son on "Grommet", the learning park, followed by an hour doing laps on Snowdance. Skiers right on snowdance was an absolute riot, the waterbars forming jump after jump for my son, and the powder forming bump after bump for me to work on my bump skills. I rode the lift up with a couple who were one car behind the car that had the tree fall on it on route 9.

Monday: My 41st birthday! Took a personal day from work and went skiing in the bitter cold with my wife. Summit lifts closed due to wind at about 10. Lines stayed reasonable on Canyon and non-existant at Nitro. I enjoyed the bumps and powder on Lower Ledge, Ego Alley. Also went to Carinthia and did some cruising down the well groomed edges of the parks. RIding the lift at Carinthia I saw many people in the Claim Jumper Trees , all the tree areas will be skiable now, although I worry about the freezing rain forecast in the near future.

It was a good weekend!

Sweetness Sunday!

I was at Mt. Snow Sunday. Great times. Did the North Face shuffle all morning 8-11, working our way across from Olympic to Jaws, then back! Heavy Snow at times. Got at least 6" during the day I would guess. Piles of powder everywhere. Untouched could still be had in abundance from Friday-Sunday snow.
Headed down a reserved Uncles for lunch from 11:15 til noon. Hit the woods after that. Lot of limbs and uprooted tress from the ice storm. Some great pow shots! Had to be a little careful though. More stopping to pick out lines than usual. Finished up with a couple last runs on the Main Face down the Ledge to Lodge route! Was skiing as good as it gets! Came off the hill at 4:15. Had to get my buddy Chris home for work Monday so my 2.25 hour drive home became 3.5. Would have loved to stay for Magic but....next time. Great weekend for New England ski areas!

ok heres the play by play.

sunday:
role out at 6am to snair. progressivly turns to snow. about 8 miles from brattleboro on the first big hill a tree had fallen on top of a car so the road was closed. so i had to back track and take rt 30 up to around stratton then come down 100 south(major suck). finally get to snow at 1pm park in c lot, boot up and grab a tik. took the summit quad up and did four laps in south bowl/sundance the left side of south bowl was pretty deep and sundace was deep on both sides. on my fith run did south bowl/tram line to sap tapper. first woods run. these woods are not really ready for full on riding. way to many roots and down trees plus the blowin was just covering some nasty stuff. since i could ride with speed in the woods i jetted over to the canyon express. to check out overbrook per jeff's recomendation. was pretty good but i notice the romp was up on one more time so next ride up i some how ended up on the other side of said rope. shit was money. so ijust lapped that for the rest of the day. o mt snow has some serrious waterbars i hit the first one of the day going mach snell no fun. i deffinatly had to keep my speed down. i some how got a min of 16 runs in.

went to the lodge at mt snow and checked in after i managed to have the box to a 12pack of otter creek copper disintigrated in my hand down at the 7/11. mr friends showed up at 6 we had some food there and me and jess played some drunken pool then went to my room to try and watch the 3rd mummy movie.

monday: wind

got to the mountain at 10 they where sutting down the summit. so we just basically did laps on the canyon express. they should have run ego ally too. most of the day was spent going about half way down wait for the other three then letting them go by wait for a few min then beet them to the bottom. they where having some troble with wind affected but i was having blast on the side of the trails. twoard the end of the day i found a way to cut through the woods to get to choke then over to lodge and to pats pitch great blow-in and nobody else seemed to be doing it. the first drop on pats was fun as hell to hit going full tilt. you could get a good 15' airs off it. it was funny at the end of the day looking at all my bomb holes there where like 8 or 9 going left to right. bumped in to troller and he asked me if i was ok as i was standing there and i just said i was admirering my days work. he started to laugh. the day was cold and just got colder as the day went on i would say it -30 at the top of the canyon exp.

jeff had sugested we go to the the Inn At Sawmillfarm. very good french and a friggin slammin wine collection. the owners daughter said it was his baby. $400 later we left stuffed and feeling the vino. me and jess play a game of pool then went and watched "its all that"

tuesday: bluebird

got to the mountain around 10:30 ecause i had to do some work in the lodge before getting out so everyone left without me. told them i would meet them at the base of the summit quad at 10:30. waited 10 min the headed up. i went right to the sunbrook, as this is where the wind from the previous day had deposited all the snow. took sunspot to darkside of the moon to thanks walt to beartrap lift to nugget to long john to switchback to the base of the summit quad. did that 8 times fkna. the darkside glades where better because the had a bit more coverage but there was some nasty shit in there. another 2 feet and it will be perfect. well at least for the way i ride in the trees.

shot over to the north face to check out the trials. this area really reminded me of the bench just shorter. felt like i was home. it still need another 2 feet to be ready for real riding. but it is legit and i could lap it all day.

took the challenger up and hiked over to the top of the sunbrook quad which was closed. the snow covering the rope to little dipper so i hit it. now they closed this for a good reason ever roll over was blown to ice on the backside and the regular person would have just slid down into the windlow and ejected but i had a simple sollution just launch off the top and land in all the windblown goodness. perfect 6 to 7 foot drops. there was line on the left right before one small step that was basically a wind lip pillow line 5 drops right in row. the cut aross on one small step so i would come out befor the lift on a open trail. did that 2 more time last time a troller followed me but didn't say anything till i got down to the beartrap lift. i asked him why he didn't stop me and he said it looked like i was having way to much fun. dude must have had nija skills because i never saw him behind me. told him that was my last run anyway and had to get back to work. so he really didn't seem to care.

all in all i had a great time with a few friends and got hit some good conditions and now i know where to ride on the mountian to get the goods. i have no idea the depth of the snow because i just float on top unless im landing but in the spot where i was landing there was an easy 4 feet(blown in)

the girls took some pics but the where just of me layin huge trenches standard and shots of us at dinner.

Sounds like you had a great time, hardline. Did you consider hitting Magic on Mon or Tues? The TR's from Magic for those days look like some great powder conditions. Just curious.

i thought about it but the people i met up with had bought a package. i could have bailed on them and ran over but i was having fun with my freind jess and i was able to get some good fresh lines all day while they rode the blvd's down. i was also helping her get her new board/bindings dialed in. i also came the realization they need to teach proper equipment set up in a lesson. once a person is more comfortable in their equipment. they progress much faster. i may start doing privates for people. teaching them everything they should really know to progress from upper beginner to advanced intermediate.
if the they place went on full hold i was going to go over to magic or go over to haystack skin.

reefer,
Awesome pics! Amazing how things have changed since my wife and I were last there the week of 12/8.

hardline,
Sounds like you made the most of it! Those water bars can be a real bear if you don't know where they are. At other times, you can get some decent air.

ya im past the whole air to flat landing. unless its steep on the backside i don't hit it. the trick to the water bars is time your turns so you hit them at an angle. and what is up with att at snow no coverage.
