My new trumpet hero/idol is Joe Burgstaller (7.5 years with Canadian Brass). I want to play like this guy... chops + personality... incredible!

From his classical repertoire, played at the Peabody Institute, where he is a trumpet professor:

Vivaldi-Bach (BWV 972) Mvt 3 (my personal favorite):

BWV 972 Mvt 1 (love how he almost swings the beginning!):

From his recent classical/jazz crossover album, Mozart's Blue Dreams (you have to watch them in order for it to "make sense"):

Incredible. And hilarious. That guy is awesome.

Do you blow?

Poorly, so don't ask for any favors  (<- sorry for giving in to the dirty joke. back on topic...)

I kinda play. I try, anyway. I really enjoy the trumpet, but my real musical problem is that I play a lot of instruments acceptably, but I don't really play any of them exceptionally well. If I would just focus on one..........................

Absolutely! Please pass them along!

I'd love to improve on the trumpet. But amongst all of my other engagements and activities, finding time to really drill the chops is tough. I have to spend a fair amount of practice time on the organ, since it's part of my job description! But I am trying to fit in more trumpeting.

BMM - this is for you:

I just showed this to my kids a few weeks ago during jazz ensemble rehearsal. My trumpet section cried.

You familiar with Wayne Bergeron?

Fantastic! Love the arrangement. Couldn't play it in a million years, but fun to watch!

Just watched a couple of vids of Wayne Bergeron. I like it.

Do you teach/direct a school jazz ensemble?

Yeah, Adam Rappa is pretty intense. If you do a youtube search for him, there are all kinds of awesome videos. Stuff from the international trumpet competition and such.

Because school blocks youtube, I cant get you the link but you should look up the Julliard School Trumpet Ensemble playing Festive Overture. It is beautiful. *** HERE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJzvksj3cFQ ***

I do teach high school jazz. I have 2 ensembles: one is an advanced band that is the most intense playing most of these kids will do. (those who don't go into music anyway) and the other is a more relaxed band for kids who are just switching instruments who want to play. Those rehearsals are some of the best moments of my week.

How long have you been playing?

Well, my musical career is rather convoluted!

I've playing the organ/piano professionally for almost 10 years. I started playing for weddings/receptions when I was 11. I actually started playing when I was 8. I picked up acoustic guitar around the same time. My freshman year of high school I picked up brass. Primarily focused on bone, but also blew on the trumpet from time to time. I was playing bone in concert band, orchestra, and marching band, and was playing piano and bone in jazz band. At the time, I lived in Pennsylvania. Then during my Junior year we moved up here to VT.

At Harwood Union High School, I was able to really enjoy one of the nation's finest high school jazz programs under the direction of Bruce Sklar. I played bone in our advanced jazz ensemble, and played treble cleff euph for concert band and wind ensemble. Concert band was always fun, but the jazz program was my favorite. Each year that we competed in the Berklee Jazz Fest, we placed well. The year before I moved up and joined the band, our advanced ensemble won the competition for our school classification. The year I was playing with the group, our score would have landed us 2nd place, but we went 8 seconds over the time limit and were disqualified.

Harwood is a "Grammy Signature School," and excels in all areas of music performance.

Here are a few samples of our work from the year and a half I was attending:

http://friendsofharwoodmusic.org/images/huhs_multimedia/audio/harwood2006-07/Nicas Dream.m4a (a little rough in the opening bars... not our best performance... trumpeter had a rough night!)

Wind Ensemble:

Post-high school, I've been continuing to play some jazz piano gigs, including a few at Timbers at Sugarbush. I'm still playing plenty of weddings. I'm also Director of Music at Blessed Sacrament Church in Stowe, which includes playing the organ and directing a 12 piece adult choir, along with other various duties.

So that's kinda my music story in a nutshell.

Puh-lease. I've seen your guitar vids her and you rip on it. Not my kinda style, but I can appreciate the technical difficulty in what/how you play.

Wow..small world. What years were you at Harwood? I used to live in Colchester and saw the Harwood Jazz group tons of times while I was in the ensemble. I do remember a girl who played sax from Harwood who was BURNING! (and...very hot) I think I remember you guys performing at the Discover Jazz Festival.

Bruce Sklar did a recording project with my sax teacher, Dave Grippo. The album was great. At the time, I was a lost soul and really didn't take full advantage of his teaching and abilities. What a waste.

It is awesome to hear you are still so involved in music. It helps that you have had such great experiences as you did growing up.

I used to play the trumpet in grammar and middle school. I was never very good and mostly just faked it in the later years.. I kinda wish I had put more effort into it...

Small world indeed... Grippo's the man! Sorry you didn't take full advantage!

Yeah, "Passing Through" was their album, right?

I was at Harwood January 2006 until spring 2007. Yeah, we usually played at the Discover Jazz Fest. Also at the Flynn.

Correct. Good album. And yes, Dave is the man. What a player. I am not sure if his funk group is still together but whenever they play church street, if I am in the area I am there. They tend to play the Red Square a lot.

The Flynn thing was hip. Our band always sucked. Always. I'll never forget the words out of the adjudicators mouth after we finished my senior year. We had blue polos with white pants. He said, "So, you guys look like you are ready for Florida". Nothing about music or our playing. That was when I new we had issues.

2006 - 2007 is a bit after me. Glad to hear things are still going strong there. Harwood, U-32, Lyndonville...I think those were the really burning programs in the state.

Did you check out the Julliard video?
