If you do and ski Killington, Pico, or Okemo, the time to buy is during National Safety Awareness Week (Jan. 16-22).

Killington and Pico are offering a free mid-week lift ticket for every helmet purchased at one of the resort's ski shops.

At Okemo, anyone who buys a new helmet at Okemo's Snowsports Shop will receive a coupon for 50 percent off a full-day lift ticket, or 50 percent off a full-day equipment rental or high-performance demo, or 50 percent off a group lesson or adult clinic. Okemo is also donating $10 from each helmet purchase to the Protect Head at All Time (PHAT) program.

Great deal! Does anyone know how long a helmet is supposed to last? I have had mine for quite some time. I've never bashed my head on anything, but do they lose their protection after some time?

Older helmets get pretty rank smelling after awhile even with liberal application of Fabreeze. If you aren't leaving the helmet in the sun or hot environments (like a car seat for tots) you should get more than 5 years from the helmet.

I would imagine the exposure to cold repeatedly would also make the plastic brittle. Remember stories of old ski boots exploding while being skied? But you're right that bacteria does start to grow in them after a while.

They do not have a indefinite life. The styrofoam breaks down over time, but I do not know how long they last.

I had a 19 year old pair of Nordica ski boots, kind of explode and fall apart trying to take them off in the base lodge after a day of sub zero skiing. (thank God they didn't implode while skiing) I just took them to the nearest garbage recepticale and tossed them in. After so many years the plastic gets brittle and cracks.
