I'll find out if I can give you guys a peek at the larger versions of the map and maybe the conceptual drawings.

That would be great!

Hmmmm...it's growing on me.

Pros:

  • * It really is nice and detailed and more accurately depicts the resort on a whole.

    * Does a great job illustrating the base areas and how certain portions of the ski area really are laid out to avoid confusion--Little White Heat for example gets a lot more focus on this map as does the North Peak Area. It is good to see what those trails look like when they are all spread out. I like how it depicts Barka' as well.

    * Niehaus just has a way to make a ski area more stately.
Cons:

  • * When compared to the old map, this one makes things look smaller. The old version distorted the area by stretching it from left to right and did not do a good service to the base areas. Minor trade-offs for a better map IMHO.

    * Don't like the big 'shadow' North Peak casts on Vortex and Aurora, but that is another minor trade-off and the inlay is nice.

Good improvement! I think Niehaus did a good job with both Pats Peak and Sunday River.

I recall seeing an older map in an ASC publication that depicted SR with North Peak as being in the center. It was like an upside down rendering or something...kind of bizarre :-? It was in the 2000-2001 ASC guide I believe and appeared in SKI or SKIING as well.

Oz- Glad to see Spruce Cliffs off the map. It was the name that attracted people to it just so they could say they skied the "cliffs" there...

A few reasons why Spruce Cliffs is now not on the map...
1. It requires a ridiculous amount of snow to open.
2. When it is open, it can only be open for a few hours due to how steep it is and the snow-pack being unsteady on the ledge. (250 vertical feet in 500 linear)
3. When a trail is closed, it throws off % of open terrain and trail count. The average joe sees closed trails as problems with snow.

Great trail, shouldn't have ever been on the map. But that was during the time that the mountain was getting a rep for being too easy. What a great way to show them all up by opening a freakin cliff. Not to mention Northern Exposure. People will still continue to ski that side of Spruce Cliffs, there are so many lines that people just don't know about.

Here's a sweet image of marketing ridge, I mean, Spruce Cliffs. This one was taken from Three Mile Trail over on Barker with a pretty intense lens.

that shot looks like before it drops off, where it seems deceptively easy, heh. yes, when i was there i noticed lines everywhere. no doubt taking it off the map was a good idea for all the items you listed.
