Niner Jet 9 Carbon Mountain Bike Frame - 2014
The fact that the Jet 9 Carbon Mountain Bike Frame isn't the top of Niner's line carries a distinct benefit: you don't have to pay the pole-position tax levied against the RDO frames, but you still enjoy Niner's race-ready efficiency and unrivaled 29er suspension platform. The Jet 9 Carbon shares the same monocoque front triangle with tapered head tube as the RDO " including the PF30 PressFit bottom bracket, eight oversized cartridge bearings, and cleanly routed internal cables. That's where the similarities end, and the JET 9 Carbon takes on an existence all of its own.
The rear triangle uses a similar carbon layup as the front, but Instead of carbon links, the JET 9 gets stiff, forged alloy ones. It also ditches the 12x142mm rear thru-axle in favor of 10x135mm quick-release standard. These measures reduce weight, without sacrificing anything to the handling deities.
While the industry-wide love of 29ers has sent some manufacturers into R&D purgatory in order to find a solution to full suspension/29er compatibility issues, Niner has been sitting pretty for some time with its 100 millimeters of CVA travel. The CVA suspension's lower link sits below the bottom bracket, which puts bike's virtual instant center ahead of the drivetrain and effectively isolates the drivetrain from the rear triangle. When you press on the pedals, nothing's lost to compressing the suspension, and you won't suffer kickback from chainstay growth when taking advantage of the 29er's ability to push on through rock gardens.
The CVA design also boasts stubby chainstays, which goes some way toward addressing the blocky handling issues usually associated with 29ers. The Jet 9 Carbon enjoys both the free-rolling, stable abandon of those big 29er contact points and an ability to negotiate tight switchbacks and technical stretches that's more in line with 27.5s. While climbing, it labors pleasantly with little complaint and virtually no bob. While we know and like plenty of Bobs off the bike, he can be a real killer when we're grinding over the twin peaks of our favorite local loop. Despite the abbreviated chainstays, the CVA suspension still manages to stay out of the way of your front derailleur, which is more than we can say for most other full suspension 29ers.
Adding to CVA's trail appeal is a low ratio of shock stroke to suspension movement. This decreases the amount of preload needed, which translates to smooth, effective damping and less drag on the shock seals. With CVA, plush is the name of the game, and a Fox CTD rear shock ensures that the game is played correctly. It features three distinct damping settings: Climb, Trail, and Descend, so the JET 9 is ready for any trail situation.
