This has nothing to do with skiing, but if you have a notebook computer, heed the following warning from my Corp. Security office.

snip
Avoid leaving valuables in your vehicles, even in the trunks. In several U.S. locations, we have recently seen a significant increase in the number of laptops thefts from employees’ vehicles in restaurant parking lots. In particular, thieves are targeting rental cars, punching the door lock and releasing the trunk via the interior button in the passenger compartment. The crime occurs quickly and unobtrusively; employees may not realize for hours that their laptops have been stolen.

This crime is preventable! Make sure you return your laptop to your hotel room before joining colleagues for dinner, or take your laptop into the restaurant with you.

I personally know of people this has happened to. In one case, an unscrupulous rental company agent was stealing from rental cars - most cars have a remote unlock feature for their agents. He "took the remote home" and cruised the lots. That is, until he was arrested....

This was in the news here in the nyc area a week or 2 ago:

Apparently, an employee of the City's Department of Environmental Protection left a notebook in his car for a few days, which was broken into and stolen. However, this particular notebook had a map of NYC's water supply system. Just the thing a terrorist might want.

Leave the laptop in the hotel room?

I do that when on business trips but I also have a lock that I use...I secure the lock to the laptop and then wrap the cable around the table the laptop's on. That way, if someone gets into the room (which I'd think would be just as easy of not easier than breaking into a rental car), they can try to steal the laptop but it would be more difficult to do so.

I also lock my laptop at work...a few years ago we had several laptops stolen (during the day no less!).
