Date(s) Hiked: 11/21/09 & 11/22/09
Pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/cdailey7779
Saturday: Nov 21st (Avalon, Field, Willey, Tom)
Trails(s) Hiked: Avalon, Willey Range, Ethan Pond, A-Z, Mt. Tom Spur
Total Distance: 17 miles
Difficulty: Pretty easy hiking, only steep parts are on the Avalon trail past the A-Z trail junction. and the ladder steps on the Willey Range Trail are steep!
Conditions: wet wet wet, mud mud mud! No ice though!
Special Required Equipment: none
Trip Report: the weather was pretty crummy all day, it cleared up of course when I finished. Cloud cover so I was unable to take in the nice views from Mount Avalon and missed out at looking into the pemi from the Willey Range Trail. I loved all the bog bridges on the Ethan Pond trail, there must be close to 200 of them between Willey Range and Thoreau falls trail junctions! If anyone hasn't hiked on Ethan Pond Trail between Thoreau Falls and Zeacliff Trails through Zealand notch you should check it out some time it's flat and you pass right through the boulders under Whitewall Mountain.
There were lots of cub scouts heading up to Zealand falls, even in the wet crummy weather they were having a blast jumping in the puddles!
DAY 2
Sunday: Nov 22nd (Height, Carter Dome, Wildcat A-D)
Trails(s) Hiked: Nineteen-mile brook, Carter Dome, Carter-Moriah, Wildcat Ridge, Polecat Ski trail
Total Distance: 14.5 miles
Difficulty: Some moderate difficulty, the switchbacks on Carter Dome trail are annoying and of course the steep section from Carter notch to Wildcat A peak is very steep
Conditions: all trails in pretty good shape, very little ice on the ridge that's easily avoidable
Special Required Equipment: none!
Trip Report: Perfect day, weather in the 30's and low 40's, no wind, and 75 plus miles visibility from Mount Height Summit which has incredible 365 degree views including excellent views of Tuckerman and Huntington ravines.
Stopped by Carter Notch hut to check it out, there was a big group of younger people about to head up to the Carters, they seemed pretty stoked about the great weather
Hike up to Wildcat A beat me up a little but I caught my second wind on the ridge. The views from the ski station were kick a$$, I sat and ate lunch on the picnic table and just took in the close up view of Washington, Adams, and Madison
Hiked down Polecat for the first time, it was great to hike and look into the ravines as I walked! I walked on route 16 back to my car, got some funny looks from some cars zooming by!
It was a really enjoyable day to be on the mountains...little did I know as I was taking in the perfect views into the ravines that someone had unfortunately fallen and died in tuckerman ravine the previous day =( RIP
