Based on the weather I was in no rush this morning to make the 3hr drive to Okemo. Things looked bleak at the base when I arrived at 10:15 with more mud on the mountain than snow. Used my Wawa bronze pass to score $35 dollar tickets for the day.
Considering the season so far, Okemo has quite a bit open, they are reporting 181 acres / 13.4 miles open. According to those numbers that is more open than Killington. The problem is that other than the Glades Peak Quad, and the Northstar Express, all the other lifts have only 1 run open (South Ridge, Solitude, Jackson Gore, Coleman Brook). Basically they have focused most of their snowmaking on connecting Jackson Gore with the main face of the mountain with as few trails as possible. Most people were skiing off of Northstar which led to the trails on the main face getting over skied, causing lots of bare spots. So I avoided the mainface and focused on Glades Peak, Solitude and Jackson Gore. The best runs were Limelight on Jackson Gore and Rimrock on Glades Peak. These had the most recent snowmaking so there weren't any bare sports on them.
The snow was soft spring conditions in the morning but firmed up as the day went on as it got colder. It got cloudy in the afternoon with a few rain and freezing rain sprinkles thrown in. Overall it was a good day skiing for mid April, as that's how it felt and looked.
Off to Stratton for the first time tomorrow, hopefully they get a few new inches of snow in the morning.
