LUDLOW, Vermont -- On Saturday, March 29, Okemo Mountain Resort will celebrate Sustainable Slopes Day with music, events, food sampling, giveaways and the IZ Style Winter Tour and Reverb Eco-Village. Discounted lift tickets will be available to skiers and riders who carpool to the resort that day.
Sustainable Slopes Day commemorates Okemo Mountain Resort's continued support of a charter developed by the National Ski Areas Association. The Sustainable Slopes Charter includes environmental principles for ski area planning, operations and outreach. Resorts that voluntarily support the charter promote environmental stewardship and develop practices that allow future generations of guests to enjoy recreational opportunities and the beauty of the natural environment.
Sustainable Slopes Day will be hosted by ECO, the newly formed Environmental Committee at Okemo. ECO has been working with resort management to develop a plan to minimize environmental impact, reduce energy consumption, expand the resort's recycling program, manufacture bio-diesel from discarded kitchen oil for use by resort vehicles, and to help educate guests and resort staff about the natural environment and ways to reduce impact on it.
The Reverb Eco-Village, located at the Jackson Gore base area, will serve as the hub for Sustainable Slopes Day events and information. The Eco-Village will be comprised of booths promoting solar energy, bio-fuels, natural and organic foods, and other enviro-friendly companies. Complimentary food samples, raffles, music, and natural history tours will be ongoing throughout the day. The IZ Style Winter Tour brings the Bud Light Concert Series, featuring Audio Journal, to entertain during an après ski party. A complimentary guided snowshoe hike will depart from the base area at 3:30 p.m. and OkeMovie Night in the Jackson Gore Inn Cornerstone Room will feature an environmentally themed film later that evening.
Skiers and riders who carpool to Okemo on Sustainable Slopes Day will receive $5-off coupons toward the purchase of a full-price lift ticket valid that day.
More information may be obtained by calling (802) 228-1600, by visiting www.okemo.com, or by e-mailing environment@okemo.com.
