I have gone to Sunapee Feb 4 and Jan 29. The last Saturday in Jan was by far the best day of the year. I hate to say it but that might be the peak. The manufactured bumps were in great condition and caused the ticket value to soar. What they do is use the snowcats to plow up snow in a honeycombed pattern. All down the flying goose lies a man-made bump field par excellence. These new shallow bumps are easy to ski and make you look like a pro. I was formerly trained at Steamboat, CO during my ski-bum days.

For some odd reason the storms are massive ocean bound storms that miss the land.

I had named all the Noresters this season. While we had a great start we only got to Daphne and it was over.

Are the moguls the same as they were the last few years? Because personally I think those manmade moguls at sunapee are the worst things ever. Reason 62,239 I hate sunapee. Why cant they let moguls just form on there own, like everyone else? IMO manmade snow and moguls dont mix.

While I can't say my comments are very objective, Sunapee has been great, given with what they have had to work with all season long.

Saturday, 2/4, after a day of rain, was a great day. It started out with some very hard pack. I skiied my first run down Hansen-Chase (there was a Masters race on Lynx) and while it was very fast (aka icy), I knew it would soften up. The rest of the day I was either in the bowl or over on Upper Blastoff. It was spring skiing but it didn't get too mashy.

I'm the eternal optimist , and they got an 1" of natural (this winter that's something to celebrate) and they're blowing snow all over the mountian. So I bet conditions will improve (did I mention I'm an eternal optimist?)

I'll be there on Saturday, and the BWL j-4/j-5 qualifer is on Sunday at Sunapee probably on Lynx.

Ummm not where I ski....

Just curious where do they do it?

Sunapee is the only place I have ever been that did it? I think sugarloaf might too.

God I wish! At Hunter bumps are formed by skiers AND boarders...you know, the steep cross cut variety? It's not that one or the other discipline is to blame, just the wide spectrum of abilities.

Anything "manmade" is set up using stubbies or ski poles, and then the lines get to stay a day before the groomers mow them down.

You guys have a great idea at Whaleback...there's a hidden demand for exactly what you're offering. Go for it!

We'll be watching and I'll be very interested in what I see when I visit.

I believe any mountain that has a freestyle team probably uses a cat to make the moguls. Since the freestyle association has specific requirements and specifications for a course, I believe this can really only be achieved with a cat. Though I'm not freestyler, nor do I pretend to be... :-D

Watch the freestyle events in Torino, I betcha those are man made.

BTW, Cranmore used to have natural bumps on Koessler, don't know if they still do when they have snow

Hunter has a freestyle team...they should have seeded bumps...but they don't.

All World Cup bump courses are cut by machine.

Loon,Waterville,Sunday River,Sunapee,Sugarloaf, Stratton, Killington all cut moguls by cat. I would bet that there are many more areas that do the same. There are areas that let some trails go wild and bump naturally. In the "B" level of Freestyle it is suggested that the moguls be 11' on center with straight lines, since the athlete is judged on Turns and lines.

Yes, World Cup moguls are all cut with a cat. Watch Hannah Kearney from Norwich, VT at Torino. She'll win a Gold Medal on Cat cut moguls.

Man-made bumps are better than no mumps at all. It won't take long for Sno-Boarders to shave them into pointy obstacles!

Anyone, the Lynn Mass guy, why do you hate Sunapee?

Actually, the snowboarders at Sunapee are usually too busy creating crud mounds on the blue trails...all those panic stops when they go over the "ledges"...

I guess I shouldn't complain, it gets me to work a little bit on my non-existent bump skills...

Got in trouble for the remark I guess...

Honestly, I have nothing against snowboarders, and I do stay out of the parks because I know I'd be in the way...

Oh no don't get me started, this is going to be too much fun  :

Flat, there is nothing really steep at all, and the 3 steep runs(lynx, goosebumps, and flying goose) are too short, and not really that steep. I have to admit goosebumps is pretty nice, but the steep section is way too short. Flying goose has those awful ice moguls, and lynx is off camber(which is good for natural runs but not carvers) but besides that is pretty nice. So I guess north peak is okay, but nothing great. But besides those 3 runs the mountain is totally flat.

Grooming, they truly murder the mountain. Seriously they have 65 runs can't you leave a little ungroomed.

Food is total crap.

Lodges are small and over crowded.

Too crowded. Lines aren't that bad, but having two quads dump off in the same area when there arent that many trail choices= total zoo, plus all the gapers there dont help with trail crowds.

Expensive. $58, are you kidding me

Not enough snow. There low in elavation and just don't get much snow. Sure they make a lot but IMO manmade snow is just not fun. I would rather ski something with little coverage that is soft, then something that has a huge manmade base but is rock hard.

All in all I would go to Cannon over sunapee almost everyday, and its only 15-30 longer drive(and it is actually an easier drive because it is all highway)
Even if Cannon's conditions are worse it is still more fun.

You should know better then starting a snowboarder vs skier pissing match... It's a "pandora's box"

Oh - and man made bumps suck the soul out of skiing.

I was wondering when you would comment...

I'd for one would like to call the urinating match off.

The problem at Sunapee is that there are a lot of less experienced folks there who seem to get spooked when they see a bit of a ledge. The common reaction is to skid down instead of trying to actually carve some turns. Makes for nicely scraped up conditions by the afternoon...
