I was thinking about this last night and tonight while outside. Certainly not the first time I've noticed it, but on nights like last and tonight when it's super cold; all you hear outside are branches snapping in the quiet of the night.

Probably where the term comes from eh?

Actually, one of the definitions in Merriam Webster for "snap" is "a sudden spell of weather <a cold snap>"... I always imagined the origin was because it's associated with a quick or abrupt onset.
