They've always looked like that, and yes pretty hideous for sure.
I believe that I read somewhere that Poma and Dopp have actually patented their chair designs and made it difficult for the (formerly) independent SkyTrac to make carriers.

Well you CERTAINLY can't miss their distinctive appearance! And I am also in the "not a fan" of there look, even though many of my early chairlift rides were on a Riblet center pole double that has some resemblence to Sky Trac's current look
