Pearl Izumi Pearl Crew Softshell Jacket - Men's
Pearl Izumi touts the Crew Softshell Jacket as an off-the-bike version of its line-topping P.R.O. Softshell offering, but we know better. Except for the fit, which Pearl stepped down from "Form Fit" to "Semi-Form Fit," it's virtually identical to the P.R.O. iteration, including its construction of Softshell fabric. So sure, we'll agree that this makes it ideal for pedestrians in inclement conditions, but it's also great for a cyclist who wants a more relaxed jacket to match his mountain biking kit or who isn't enthused with the painted-on pro fit of the P.R.O.
The P.R.O. Softshell uses Pearl's Softshell material throughout its construction, providing a level of wind and water-resistance that is only rivaled by the slightly lofted lining's out-sized warmth. The fabric provides an accommodating stretch, so your "casual" (again, we take issue with that limiting designation) cold weather armor doesn't actually feel like armor, and it doesn't compromise breathability, either, so water vapor will move freely from the inside out, even while the outside water is denied entry.
Though the fit isn't as slim as the P.R.O., the Crew Softshell Jacket is still much more complementary than the usual tent-shape of most non-cycling jackets. Like the P.R.O., it also incorporates a small army of thoughtful details. The full-length front zipper has a corresponding internal draft flap to keep the wind's probing fingers at bay. Though it doesn't have the P.R.O.'s rear pockets, it does afford your hands some winter quarter in the form of two hand pockets, and a chest pocket with a snap provides storage for keys and personal effects. The high collar is a rampart against the cold, and the sleeves' cuffs have gaskets for yet more protection. The Crew doesn't include the P.R.O.'s reflective elements.
The Pearl Izumi Crew Softshell Jacket is available in five sizes ranging from Small to XX-Large in the colors Black/petrol blue and White/black.
