Resort or Ski Area: Pico Mountain

Conditions: Overcast, socked in clouds at the top. Hardpack on the groomers, crust on the natural trails.

Trip Report:

Well, probably should've called an audible and stayed in Northern VT where there was no rain, but I had the DMB freebie ticket and plans of meeting a friend from Southern VT, so Pico was the place for the day.

As expected, very few people there, maybe 50 cars in the lot. I was expecting the outpost double to be closed, but was really dissappointed that the A Slope chair was closed as well. I can understand cutting costs, but they had the beginner double and the triple servicing the park open. I think it would make sense to move the park to the trail under the Golden Express, close that triple that services basically nothing and operate the A slope chair.

Groomers were fast and fun. I love Upper KA, Sunset and even 49er. I think all three are better cruising runs than you'll find at Kton. Upper Giant Killer was a crust busting punishing run, but we did it a few times. Great bumps, but couldn't let em run because of the crust. We skated up to ski Sidewinder off of the Outpost and found the same challenging crust. Summit Glade had seen a lot more traffic so the bumps were rippable in places. I absolutely love Summit Glade; think it's one of the top 10 best designed trails in the east. In general, Pico has very well designed trails. Some are wide boulevards, but there's a ton of character to a lot of the trails.

Looking up Upper Giant Killer:

Only disappointment in the day was not getting to ski A slope. It's one of my favorite trails at Pico. Anyone ever skate up to it from the bottom of Summit Glade where Bushwacker comes across??? I thought about it, but my buddy wasn't into it. Fun guy to ski with, but a bit lazy. He was bitching about the 5 minute skate up to the Outpost, so I didn't want to hear it if the skate up to A slope was considerably longer.

Don't they tend to just run that A Slope chair on the weekends? Sounds like a decent day none-the-less. Love Pico.

I knew they closed the Outpost midweek. I was unaware of the A slope being closed. I can appreciate saving money. I just think it's a mistake to have the park over off the Knomes Triple and operate that lift, instead of the A slope lift. Maybe they do so for condo / home access over there? If that's the case, closing the A lift makes those units not ski in / ski out too

The park can be moved and the terrain on the A Slope is more appealing to a greater variety of skiers with B slope being a nice cruiser and A slope a great expert run.

Is there ever a time that they open Outpost or A-slope mid-week? With those closed, I'm not sure if I'll use my midweek coupon this year :(

I don't know how the decision gets made, but last Thursday ALL the lifts were running. Perhaps it was because it was a perfect powder morning, or perhaps it was that the summit lift had been closed 'till 11AM that day?

Nice repot.

No issues with the DMB freebie? Did you print it out or show them your email? Plannig a 48hr excursion up there based on using the freebie and the 2 for 1 at K with a buddy.

nope zero. handed it to them, scanned it and off I went.

the outpost trails are a short hike up....

Yep, as mentioned, we hiked up and skied Sidewinder. I do believe the hike to the A slope trails would be considerably longer though.

To the best of my knowledge, Little Pico Triple only runs when there is races or training on B-Slope. When I skied there a few weeks ago, they opened it from 1p-4p for training. From what I recall, if it wasn't for the ski club there and races, they wouldn't even run it at all.

That fits...the Thursday I was there there was race training on B slope.
