Date(s) Skied: Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010
Resort or Ski Area: Pico Mountain, VT
Conditions: Sunny and warm
Trip Report:
Spent an outstanding Easter morning at Pico on Sunday. Had to drop off my sister at the airport in the afternoon, so we got ourselves out of bed in time to get on the mountain as soon as it opened. We were rewarded with another beautiful spring day, and a little pre-slushification cord:
Lower Pike
Zoomed in on the cord
Pico is one of the most scenic mountains I've visted in the Northeast. The location provides a much better view of the surrounding area than Kilington, since there's none of the clutter from the base development. These pics don't really do it justice, but the early morning atmospheric effect is really stunning. Here's a view of the valley opposite the mountain:
And a nice view of Killington from the top of the mountain:
Skied a mixture of easy-going groomers and fairly gentle spring bumps. Top portion of Pike was bumped up nicely:
Run of the day was Summit Glades. Easy-going low-angle spring bumps meandering through islands of trees, with some bare spots, branches, and sink holes to keep things interesting:
Shot a little video about halfway down Summit Glades:
If that was the run of the day, the understatement of the day goes to:
Had to dismount to access Giant Killer (obviously), but it was worth the wait. That is a fun run, especially with the added excitement of sketchy coverage:
It was our first trip to Pico, and we had a blast given that we only had about three hours to ski. Its not the the biggest mountain (in fairness, a lot of the terrain was closed), but the sustained vert served by the Summit Express lift allowed us to ski a ton in the short time we had. Great way to celebrate Easter.
