Yesterday we decided to hit Plattekill. This a mountain where you want decent snowfall before you go as their snowmaking is limited. Plattekill is a bit further, about 20 miles, than Bellyeare. One thing I forgot is that you do have to take back roads to get there. As a result, we didn't get there until about 9:30, by the time we booted up and all and took off for the hill, it was about 9:45 as you can see by the photo, the place was swamped with skiers at this late hour:
Liftlines were unbelievable:
Blockbuster had tons of folks on it:
As did the Face:
But we did finally find some solitude on Buckle Up:
All kidding aside, I love this mountain, but it has to be hit under the right conditions. Yesterday's conditions, although not stellar, were not bad. It was mostly powder on top of hard pack with minimal ice coming through. Guess that's the advantage of natural snow as opposed to manmade, far less ice.
Due to the fact that my wife still needs to get past her fears after her injury, we just stuck to the blue runs for the 4 hours that we were there. They were all in pretty good shape. I did venture off to Blockbuster and Plunge on my own. Blockbuster had some nice powder on it with weeds poking through near the top. Plunge had a bit of ice near the headwall, then was some nice cruising the rest of the way. Overall not a bad day, would have been more interesting and would have stayed longer if we could have hit more of the tougher terrain, but hey, it's better than nothing
