Burlington and Portland are both pretty good, but have to put VT's less-dense trees and altitude above Portland plus VT has an abundance of beautiful creek-style water...a haven for a ww-paddler, although the coast to both the immediate south and north is nice...any place close to/in the Mahoosucs would be nice. Portland has definite career growth....but used to be far smaller in character in the past = the price of growth from out-of-staters, but who can blame them.

I think everyone pretty much agrees that Burlington is better if you are focused on the mountains and outdoor sports requiring mountains. But Portland is the better town for overall overall quality of living, prices, stuff to do, accessibility, etc. Not having to deal with the University culture and traffic can be included with quality of living as well as the ocean.
